Detoxification and Why It Is Important For Your Health

In my daily work with clients, I see the powerful benefits of detoxification. I know that the word detoxification might sound “eww I don’t want to do that. That sounds awful. It sounds like it might be a difficult process, or the food I will have to eat is gross. Maybe there is no food or no motivation to do it.”

In this article I wanted to start out with explaining it a little bit, and sharing why it is so important, so that you can understand why it’s so important you might want to look a little bit further into doing this for yourself, your longevity, and most importantly your health span.

Why Do We Need Liver Protection

Detoxing, or detoxification, refers to the process of eliminating toxins and harmful substances from the body. While the human body has its built-in detoxification systems, such as the liver and kidneys, they are getting bogged down and overburdened by today’s lifestyles.

Some of the Factors Leading To Our Liver and Kidneys Not Being Able To Do Their Job Well Are:

Environmental pollution: We are exposed to a wide range of environmental pollutants on a daily basis, including air pollution, chemicals in household products, pesticides, heavy metals, and more. We’ve had over 144,000 man-made chemicals introduced into our world since WWII, and this includes pharmaceutical drugs, which our liver must process as well.

Personal Care Products: These products are laden with toxins, and the average woman puts over 200 toxins onto her skin before leaving the house in the morning, and it only takes 26 seconds for those to get into our bloodstream.

Dietary Toxins: The modern Diet often includes processed foods, artificial additives, preservatives, and high levels of sugar and unhealthy fats. Detoxing can assist in reducing the intake of these toxins and supporting a healthier diet.

Stress and Lifestyle Factors: High levels of stress, lack of Sleep, sedentary lifestyle, and excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol can all contribute to toxin accumulation in the body.

Digestive Health Issues: Poor diet, food sensitivities, and imbalanced gut microbiota can lead to digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, and inflammation. Detox programs often focus on improving digestive health by eliminating trigger foods and promoting the consumption of nutrient-dense, easily digestible foods.

Most products on the market today do not even have to be tested and proven safe, instead the onus is on us, the people, to prove they are unsafe, which can take years to get them off the shelves, not to mention the legal costs of that process. Just look at the legal cases against Monsanto for their use of glyphosate or “Round Up”.  They’ve paid out millions in fines to people who have contracted Cancer and yet the glyphosate hasn’t been removed from use and is still heavily sprayed on our food crops.  Even though they know how harmful it is to our health.

Depleted Soil Systems: Since the time of the agricultural revolution, and trying to grow more food, make more drought resistant crops and feed the planet we have been take, take, take from the soil and we are not allowing the soil to settle, rest, and rejuvenate so when the nutrients are not in the soil they don’t get grown into our foods.

Our bodies need specific nutrients for the detox process to happen efficiently and unfortunately due to depleted soil systems, we are no longer getting most of those nutrients through our food supply, and that means our liver can’t convert the toxins to being water soluble, so that we can excrete them through our breath, skin, urine, and bowels. Instead, the liver is very clever and stores the toxins it can’t excrete in our fat closets. You might be wondering where we have fat closets in our body…. In our brain (it is made up largely of fat and water) and in our breasts for women and then anywhere we store excess fat on our body.

I don’t know about you, however I do not want toxins running around in my brain or my breasts. We already have a near epidemic levels of Alzheimer’s / Dementia and Breast Cancer – are you starting to see the connection?

Yes, toxin build up in our body is a trigger for “dis-ease”, which I’m sure you don’t want, and you can choose to avoid that for yourself by learning how to help your body detox on a regular basis!

As you know, we cannot control everything, what we can control is helping our liver and kidneys do their job! Know that the toxins are going to come in, and you choose to help your liver and kidneys in getting the toxins out.

Now That We Know Why We Need to Detox, Why Is It Worth Your Time and Effort?

That’s what it really comes down to right?

Increased Energy Levels: Many people report feeling more energetic and revitalized after a detox. By reducing the burden on the body’s detoxification organs, it can free up energy for other essential bodily functions, including you getting out and having fun while enjoying your day. Having the energy to play with your kids at the end of a long workday.

Enhanced Mental Clarity: How many people are going around in a constant state of brain fog, and some don’t even realize it because their mental clarity has slowly declined over time, while others are aware of the brain fog, and they want to get back to that state of mental clarity they previously enjoyed. Detoxing involves eliminating caffeine, alcohol, and processed sugar, which can negatively affect cognitive function, and as a result clients experience improved mental clarity, focus, and concentration.

Weight Management: How many people are struggling with weight release? Releasing the weight can be hard to do if you are filled with toxins. Guess what?  Those toxins weigh something and so getting them out causes some weight release, plus you are eating a balanced diet, which supports healthy weight management. You also learn through this program the timing of when to be eating your meals and you get to enjoy nutrient dense meals which leave you feeling full from one meal to the next, so you don’t have to keep snacking in between each meal.

Improved Digestion: Detoxing can help optimize digestion by eliminating processed and unhealthy foods from the diet and encouraging the consumption of nutrient-rich, whole foods. I provide all the recipes to you, and they are delicious!!!  I try to make it as easy as possible and my clients report they love these recipes, as do I, I eat them all the time not just when I am detoxing!  Improved digestion can lead to improved nutrient absorption, reduced bloating, and enhanced bowel regularity – daily constipation or diarrhea are a sign your digestive system is unhappy and asking you to do something differently – it is not to be accepted as “your normal”.

Strengthened Immune System: Who doesn’t want a strengthened immune system? Nobody plans to get sick. Nobody wants to be sick! When you have a strong immune system, your body will be able to fight whatever bacterial or viral microbes you have been exposed to. YOU don’t have to get sick! Detoxing can boost the immune system by eliminating toxins that burden the body and supporting the intake of immune-boosting nutrients. This, in turn, may reduce the frequency or severity of illnesses you might contract. In fact 70% of the immune system is housed in your gut, so as the gut starts to heal, so does your immune system.

Reduced Inflammation: This is another HUGE benefit of detoxing. By minimizing the intake of pro-inflammatory foods like processed meats, refined sugars, and artificial additives, as well as remove the inflammation inducing toxins, you will notice your inflammation levels decline, resulting in less pain in your joints and easier movement in your body. This is a key benefit, that may not be as obvious to you as some of the other ones I have mentioned. However, when the body becomes too inflamed, it triggers your genes for “dis-eases” that you are pre-disposed to, to turn on, and then you get a diagnosis of heart disease, or type II Diabetes, some kind of cancer or other chronic illness.  Epigenetics tells us it doesn’t have to be that way, when you lower your inflammation levels, those genes don’t get triggered.

Epigenetics says that it is 5% -10% of your genetics that dictate your health outcomes. The other 90% – 95% is the lifestyle you lead. What you are putting into your body from the healthy foods to the toxins that are getting in and the inflammation level that you have within your body. When you reduce the toxins, and you improve your nutrition, you reduce the inflammation, and you are empowered in your health and you are living in that 90-95% space, so that the 5-10% of your genetics never gets switched on.

It’s Powerful! You Can Do This!

Clearer Skin: Skin health can benefit from detoxing, as it helps eliminate toxins that contribute to skin issues like acne or dullness of the skin and skin health often starts in the gut, so healing the gut, and removing the toxins, helps resolve your skin issues too! That was a benefit I noticed, while not the biggest benefit, it was something I really appreciated because I was in my 30’s and 40’s wondering why I was still getting acne like I was a teenager. I thought it was hormones.

I was working to balance my hormones. It wasn’t until I started detoxing, and I got all of those toxins out that my skin cleared up.

Balanced Mood: Detoxing can have a positive impact on mood and emotional well-being. By eliminating or reducing the intake of substances that can affect mood, such as caffeine and alcohol, and focusing on whole, unprocessed foods diet, individuals may experience greater emotional stability and an overall sense of well-being. This can also come from a more even keeled insulin path in our body because you’re not on a sugar roller coaster. I’ve heard some doctors say that the quickest way to Depression is to go and eat a whole lot of sugar and then crash. When we don’t that, and we are balancing out our glucose intake with some fiber, protein, or fat,  we are not having as much of a rollercoaster ride, and we have a much flatter curve when it comes to our insulin as it is not spiking,  now it’s flat. We will have a much more balanced mood as well as much more balanced energy levels throughout the day.

Better Sleep: The body naturally detoxifies at night, and when we ease the burden on the liver and get it functioning at optimal levels, it isn’t struggling to do its job, and waking you up in the night in the process.  Also, removing the caffeine, alcohol, and sugary foods, improves sleep and shows you that you can wake up feeling refreshed, and you therefore don’t need to reach for coffee & sugar to wake up your brain in the morning!

General Well-Being and Vitality: My detox group program, called Health Kickstart + Detox incorporates helping you create healthier lifestyle habits, as we focus on nutrition, hydration, digestion, sugar, and giving you the tools to be able to take proactive action in your health for the rest of your life.  Plus, I teach you how not to retox after your detox, and I support you beyond just this detox program, by offering you the opportunity to join my community in quarterly 7-day detoxes, at no charge, as you already know how to do it, because you came to the class the first time, you just get to do it with others in our community instead of on your own! Which of course always feels better.

Here are a few of the people of the I’ve guided through the detox program, because you may relate to one or more of them or you might know someone else in your life who is struggling with one of these things and you might want to share this article with them.

Ultimately, I would love to put an end to the chronic illness that we have in the world today, and we can absolutely do that. The body is designed to heal.  The problem is in our current modern-day life because of high levels of stress and poor sleep, and poor nutrition, our body is depleted. Our body is depleted of its mineral levels, its vitamin levels, and it has this toxic load going on. Your body is just so far out of balance so it can’t bring itself back into balance because of that depleted state. When we help our body come back into balance by removing the toxins, rebalancing the minerals and vitamin levels then our body can do what it does best, which is heal itself. Then you won’t be left on a drug for the rest of your life masking symptoms, and creating side-affects, and then getting prescribed another drug and then another drug.

You can get to the root cause of your chronic illness and choose to change some of these lifestyle habits over time, you are not going to change it in 24 hours but change them over time to regain your health. Plenty of other people have done it. You just need to know that one other person has done it and that gives you the hope that you too can do it. That is what this article is about. It’s giving you hope, motivation, and hopefully some inspiration and Education so that you can do this for yourself. After all that is why you are here reading this article.

Oldest Client: 91-Year-Old Living a Year with Chronic Diarrhea

The oldest lady I’ve guided through this detox is 91 years old – she came to me after a year of diarrhea. She lives in a Nursing home, her son moved in, to cook for her, so she didn’t have to eat the food the nursing home was providing her, as they thought that might help. Then they took her to a few doctors, the last one diagnosed a bowel infection, and put her on a drug, which made it worse and after 2 days she decided that wasn’t the answer. They were referred to me, and we started the detox program and in 3 days her stools started to improve and after a week she had a normal stool for the first time in a year and after 10 days, she was feeling great again.  She now has consistent healthy stools, and she knew she had found her answer.

Youngest Client: 18-Year-Old Living with Eczema

On the flip side of that, the youngest client I’ve guided through is 18 (my program is designed for 18 years and older, since the Ayurvedic plant-based liver / kidney support hasn’t been tested on children), and she had been struggling with eczema her whole life. They’d seen a myriad of doctors, and nothing seemed to work.  We also ran her food sensitivity lab, as that is often a cause of eczema, along with toxin build up in her body. A week into the detox her eczema started to recede and by the end of the 3 weeks, she and her family were ecstatic because it had cleared up beautifully. One of her trigger foods was eggs and eggs aren’t allowed on the detox, which is why she had very quick results, we removed both the offending food and offending toxins together.  Now she knows what she needs to do to ensure the eczema doesn’t come back, she isn’t at the whim of wondering what is triggering it.

40-Year-Old Client Living with Joint Pain

I worked with a lady who had pain in all her joints and was around 40 years old. She messaged me on day 1 complaining that she didn’t love fasting (who does?), and I encouraged her to stick with the program, and trust in the process, as the fasting was allowing her body to “deep clean”, which can’t be done when digestion is turned on. I assured her she wouldn’t starve, because the shake she was drinking with the detox formula also had all the vitamins and minerals in it that her body needed to thrive.  She stuck with it and on day 3 I got another text! This time she said she was amazed how quickly this program helped her, as she could see her inflammation had gone done AND her pain was gone already. She referred other clients to me, who also had the same success with their pain issues. One lady couldn’t get up in the night and walk bare feet to the bathroom, she had to put her shoes on with orthotics, as her feet hurt so much – and in week 2 she noticed she could walk barefoot, as her pain had gone away.

When we lower the inflammation in the body it really does help to reduce the aches and pains that we feel in our joints.

Client Wanted to Detox after Chemo and Radiation Treatments for Breast Cancer

I have another client who has come through breast cancer and wanted to detox the chemo and radiation from her body as well as the effects of her Tamoxifen, which was causing awful hot flashes and night sweats. She was anxious about doing the detox; however, I assured her she could do it, and she did and within the first week her hot flashes started to dimmish and by week 2 they were completely gone. She now has the tools to manage the side effects of her drug, and the awareness as to when her body needs to detox again, by when her hot flashes start to come back.

Client Clearing Candida Overgrowth in Her Gut, Weaned Off Depression Medications

Another client worked with me through a process of detoxing and then clearing out the candida overgrowth in her gut, and through that process over the course of a year, was able to wean herself off her depression medications with the support of her doctor. She had been on the medication for years, however once we healed her gut where our feel-good neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine are made, her body was able to produce them at optimal levels again and she no longer had a need for drugs. It’s been over a year since she fully weaned herself off and she loves how she feels in her body, mind, and soul.

You see when our trashcan of toxins gets too high – the cumulative effect of toxins, plus stress, plus food sensitives, plus medications, plus inflammation, plus processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, sugar etc., it overflows.  That is when we get symptoms and diagnosis of “dis-ease”.  Before it ever gets to that, we can simply detox, to empty our trashcan instead. This is what I do and the way I love to live my life, because I focus on my health, and I want to live fully to the end and not be another statistic of the average North American spending ten years at the end of their life in a nursing home. That isn’t quality of life!

This is a game changer for you. If you want to live your life fully to the end what you do today matters! This is a very simple step you can do to remain on top of your health.
