Why You Need a Velvet Blazer

Velvet is such an iconic material for the winter months. And with blazers being shown everywhere now even for casual days, I see no reason why you shouldn’t indulge especially if you can get a great deal.

I found this green velvet blazer on the Old Navy website recently. It came in black or this green that they called “Dark Bottle” and I was impressed with the options for petites and talls. Granted, by now, the inventory is much reduced (and that is exactly why you should sign up for my emails), but I’ll include some other great options in the widget below if you are interested.

I’m sure Marsha can describe it much better than I do because she has a way with words. I would say it’s a relaxed blazer that seems more casual than work-related. The velvet is soft to the touch and I consider it true-to-size. I ordered an XS Petite and you can see how the sleeves are the perfect length without needing to be shortened.

Because it’s 100% polyester, there is no stretch to it, but I consider it relaxed because there is no real shaping to it. It’s longer than crotch length on me, which is not a style I have much of in my closet. Yet I think it will function as a great lightweight jacket because of this.

Shockingly, for all 3 of my velvet blazer outfit ideas, I did pair it with darker bottoms. Yet, there is no doubt in my mind that it will look outstanding with ivory pants or even my silver jeans.

Velvet Suit

Velvet Pant Suit For The Holidays
Pants: Old Navy~~ Jacket: Old Navy~~ Top: A New Day-Target ~~ Boots: Penny Loves Kenny-DSW~~ Belt: preloved ~~ Earrings: Just Be Youtiful~~ Purse: bought in Rome ~~Glasses: Glasses Shop code JODIE35

I ended up purchasing the matching pants at the same time on the Old Navy website. Even though I ordered the XS Petites for the pants, I may still shorten them a tad. Today I wore them with a 2-inch heeled bootie, but I like the option of being able to wear them with flats if I wish.

Insider tip: If you need petite or tall sizes, your best bet is to shop online because brick-and-mortar stores don’t have the space to carry as much inventory, as they can accommodate online.

Even though you may consider a velvet suit as dressy, I think you can casualize it with a t-shirt like I did. The woven belt and whimsical earrings keep it from being too holiday-ish.

Velvet Blazer and Flare Jeans

Jeans: Gap~~ Jacket: Old Navy~~ Top: Old Navy ~~ Shoes (last season): Ros (formerly Walking Cradles) code JODIE10~~ Necklace: won in a giveaway ~~ Earrings: Erin McDermott Jewelry-won in a giveaway~~ Purse: ~~Glasses: Glasses Shop code JODIE35

Of course, jeans are the easiest way to make any outfit seem more casual. I wore my lime green polo shirt under the green velvet blazer.

I figured this would be a perfect time to add a brooch to the outfit. I know brooches have a frumpy reputation but I’ve shown other ways to style a pin and make it modern.

Insider tip: With all of the options of jean silhouettes, I opted for a baby flare leg since they are more fitted around the thighs where the blazer hangs loose. That’s not to say you can’t experiment with your velvet blazer outfit ideas with wide-leg jeans or straight-leg jeans. Try them all and take a selfie to see how it looks.

Longer Blazer With Jeans

Another way to make your velvet blazer outfit ideas more casual is to pair the jacket with joggers and a hoodie.

Still, even with those elements, I made the outfit intentional with a brooch at the waistband (instead of a belt) and colorful flats.
Ballet flats are having a moment and they are an easy shoe to wear with everything.

Insider tip: There are many ballet flats with straps over the foot or around the ankle if you struggle with your foot coming out of them when you walk. If you don’t like the selection below, reach out and I’ll find others for you.
