Mainstream Women Wearing Suede Boots In Winter With Care Tips

Winter fashion often calls for practical pieces, but wearing suede boots in winter isn’t impossible. Sure, it’s easier here in Arizona where we don’t have snow. Yet, I found myself wearing suede boots in winter even when we lived in Denver, so I know it can be done in a smart way.
That’s why I wanted to share 3 concepts on wearing them and some smart care tips.

Quote of the day: “You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.” Shirley Chisholm

Suede boots are a winter favorite for their soft texture and refined look, but many of us hesitate to wear them when the weather is bad.

Pro tip: Many articles say that suede boots can look more expensive than cheap leather ones. If you are looking for boots that are a deal (these are discontinued styles–still fabulous, they are just not on the brand’s websites anymore), make sure to check out Online Shoe Deals and use Comfy10 for a discount.

Today, I’m sharing three fabulous outfit ideas for wearing suede boots in winter, along with tips to keep your suede looking its best.
I wanted to showcase that no matter the event, this type of footwear can always be part of your look.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

1. Charlotte-Dressy with a Skirt or Dress

Suede boots shine when paired with skirts or dresses, creating a fabulous look for winter events.

For this outfit idea, my mom styled a pair of sleek, knee-high suede boots with an above-the-knee suede dress (yes, you read that right, my 80+-year-old mother is wearing a mini dress with OTK boots).

Suede is considered a winter material so wearing it as a dress and boots is warm and cozy. Charlotte did wear tights with the look, but you wouldn’t have to depending on the temperature.

Since the overall look was monochromatic taupe, Charlotte added color with a red velvet blazer. Just like we showcased recently, velvet blazers are truly an essential.

Pro Tip: Remember there is no age limit on footwear. If you saw the photo of just the boots, you would have no idea those legs are attached to an 80+-year-old woman.

2. Jodie-Wearing Suede Boots in Winter For Casual

When it comes to casual winter outfits, jeans and suede boots are a match made in style heaven.

I believe you can create this look with absolutely ANY silhouette of denim. And since denim is available from skinnies to wide legs, you have tons of options. For this look, I chose my trouser style dark jeans that are slouchy enough for comfort, yet not sloppy.

I decided to break out this hand-knit cardigan that took me over 6 years to complete. Many times I feel a bit frumpy in my hand-knit pieces, so I decided to add sass to this look in a couple of ways.

One thing I did was to include print mixing by wearing this bow tie blouse shown with a gold cardigan about restyling our clothing.

Pro tip: I didn’t want the bow as part of the look so I just tucked it into my bra. Remember to be the boss of your clothes. Just because something is made a certain way, doesn’t mean you have to showcase it.

Pro Tip: A pop of color with your shoes may seem unintentional but it’s truly very modern. If it feels “off”, add that same color in your accessories as I did with my earrings and glasses.

3. Lesley-Relaxed but Polished: Pants and Vest

Sometimes, you need an outfit that’s comfortable yet polished enough for an appointment or a daytime event.

Enter the combination of pants that aren’t jeans with your suede boots.

Lesley styled a pair of straight-leg culottes that she shortened herself from a pair of longer trousers she had thrifted. She’s worn these with a cardigan years ago. A lightweight blouse underneath adds a leopard print to the look that is modern and fun.

While Lesley and my mom both wore a combination of red and brown, you can see how both outfits are very different and unique.
Instead of a jacket or cardigan, Lesley chose a menswear vest as her topper. These are a fabulous 3rd piece for any woman.

Lesley even shared that she has 4 pairs of tall suede boots from living in Colorado…it goes to show that they do work in “real winter weather”.
These red boots have been worn with leggings in the past.

Pro Tip: When styling relaxed-but-polished outfits, match the color of your suede boots to another element in your outfit, as Lesley did with her necklace and vest. This creates a cohesive, pulled-together look.

3 Ways Of Wearing Suede Boots In Winter

Best Ways to Keep Your Suede Boots Looking Good

Suede boots may feel delicate, but with the right care, they can last for years and continue to look fabulous. Here are my top tips:

1. Protect Before You Wear

Before stepping out in your new suede boots, apply a suede protector spray (this is the one I use) to guard against water and stains.

Pro tip: I spray this on my boots as soon as I bring them home from the store. That way I don’t forget when it’s time to style them.

2. Clean Regularly

Use a suede brush to gently remove dirt and debris after each wear. For stubborn stains, a suede eraser can work wonders (and even better when they come together on one handle).
Avoid using water, as it can leave marks on suede. Instead, blot any spills immediately with a dry cloth.

3. Avoid Wet Weather

Of course, it’s better if you can avoid wet days. But life happens.
If your boots do get wet, stuff them with paper towels to maintain their shape and let them air dry naturally. Never use direct heat, as it can damage the material.

4. Store Properly

When they aren’t on your feet, store your suede boots with “shapers” in them. Keep them away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Pro Budget tip: I use empty egg cartons to maintain the shape of my boots.

5. Address Salt Stains Quickly

Winter often means dealing with road salt, which can leave unsightly marks on suede boots. To remove salt stains, mix a small amount of white vinegar with water, dampen a cloth with the solution, and gently dab the affected area. Allow the boots to air dry and then brush the suede to restore its texture.

6. Think about the Issues Where You Live

If salt stains are the biggest concern, then opt for lighter boots like taupe, ivory, and light grey.
However, if dirt is the primary concern, then you should try darker boots like brown, charcoal, and black.
If you have both issues, then a print suede boot is your ideal footwear.

Pro tip: It’s important to alternate your footwear daily, so make sure you have a variety of boots to wear all winter long. The more you have, the longer they will last.

Why Suede Boots Are Worth It

Despite requiring a little extra care, suede boots are essential for your winter wardrobe. Their soft, velvety texture adds a touch of luxury to any outfit, making even the simplest looks feel elevated. By styling them thoughtfully and maintaining them properly, you’ll be wearing your suede boots in winter day after day.
