How To Wear Green-3 Stylish Ways
As part of our Thrifty 6 group, Sally chose the prompt “Wintergreen.” That being said, I thought it would be fun to come up with 3 concepts on how to wear green. Needless to say, we didn’t all style the shade winter green, but these ideas work with any green.
And considering this is our Thrify 6 group, we are also showcasing how we can be stylish with many preloved items.
Quote of the day: “I’ve made it a principle not to be over-influenced by minor disappointments.” Marianne Moore
Unless you are Lesley (who is not a fan of green), I consider green one of those colors that feels fresh, vibrant, and versatile all year long. Whether you’re diving headfirst into bold hues or prefer to keep things subtle, green offers a spectrum of shades to suit every style and occasion.
And notice I said I’m showing concepts on how to wear green. Sure, there are all kinds of color combinations and ways to wear it casually vs dressy, but I wanted to concentrate on a different angle.
By thinking about how to wear green in these ways, you can use this recipe for any season, for people of any age and shape, and last but not least, for any budget.
This is not the first time we have showcased some version of green on my site. Feel free to explore the wide range of looks we’ve styled in the past.
1. Charlotte-Make a Bold Statement with Green
For the fearless fashionista, why not go all-in with a bold green clothing item? My mom is wearing a vibrant green silk blouse that she hand-sewed years ago.
She wore it over a green and white striped top that had sparkles giving sass to the look.
Style detail: What you don’t notice in the photos is that the green striped top is glittery. Glitter is a fabulous detail to bring to any outfit, yet if it feels too bold, wearing a jacket to cover some of it can be key.
And remember, most people are viewing your outfit from a distance and don’t notice all of the details that you do.
To keep the look balanced for those who shy away from too much color, my mom paired this stunning piece with other neutrals.
That doesn’t mean you can’t add in other colors, but for those people looking for how to wear green, this is a great way to dip your toe into wearing bright colors.
Style Tip: If you’re nervous about going all-in with such a bold shade, try throwing a neutral blazer or cardigan over the colorful item so you don’t see it as much.
Details and Insider info:
My mom sewed this blouse for herself from material that she bought from Shipshewana, Indiana. It’s a beautiful natural silk that lends itself to each and every season.
I’d also like to point out that she is carrying a straw purse even though it’s winter. There is no rule that says straw purses are only for the summer months.
2. Jodie-Add a Pop of Green with Accessories
Not ready to commit to a full green outfit? Accessories are your best friend! I wanted to showcase the concept of adding a color with your accessories or extras.
For this outfit, I decided to use a monochromatic white look to pop the green accessories. I added a gorgeous green scarf, tied around the neck for a touch of style as well as green boots.
To complement the scarf, I chose a beaded green purse. The bag brings cohesiveness to the look and shows how accessories can work together to pull in a specific color. My earrings and glasses also have green in them.
Style Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix shades of green in your accessories. The idea of different shades or even textures can add depth and interest. The key is to stick to a cohesive palette for the rest of the outfit.
Details and Insider info:
A monochromatic white look always tickles my fancy. In real life, you would notice that the ivories aren’t exactly the same shade and yet you can see that doesn’t make a difference in these photos.
I tied the scarf using this video as inspiration and even though it didn’t turn out the same, it’s cute.
Then I added these earrings that Lesley gave me since they were her mother’s but since she doesn’t like green, she never wears them.
This bulky sweater is such a cool design, and for the cooler months, I layer under it. Today I layered with my lace halftee.

3. Lesley-Blend Green into a Patterned Piece
For those who love a balanced blend of colors, incorporating green through a patterned piece is the way to go. Lesley styled a print sweater that has green in it but isn’t overpowering green.
To tie it all together, she used the colors in the sweater for her skirt and then added a green jacket for possible chilly temperatures.
Even though Lesley is not a fan of the color green, I twisted her arm years back to buy this thrifted suede jacket. She has worn it in the past with a black skirt and sneakers.
Style Tip: Patterns with green are a fantastic way to ease into wearing the color. Look for a color combination that feels good to you and will take the focus instead of concentrating on the green. Then, choose one of the colors from the pattern to guide your choice of other pieces in the outfit.
Details and Insider info:
This look is one that pushes Lesley out of her comfort zone. From styling green to belting the sweater (which she is much more comfortable doing now) and pairing ankle boots with a skirt.
For those of you who grew up believing all of the old-fashioned rules, be like Lesley and try new things.
Lesley made this satin skirt more casual by pairing it with the sweater and belting it. The incorporation of different textures with the satin skirt, knit sweater, and suede jacket is also a fabulous concept.
How to Wear Green for Everyone
One of the best things about green is its inclusivity—there is a shade for everyone. Whether your complexion is better with warm colors or cool colors, everyone can find ways to wear it. Heck, if you don’t feel like it looks good with your coloring, then wear it on the bottom half. But I will say, that I bet there’s a green that will make your skin tone glow and your confidence soar.
Mixing Green with Other Colors
Green is more versatile than you might think when it comes to color pairings. Here are a few combinations to try:
- Green + Neutrals: For a classic and timeless look, pair green with beige, gray, white, or black.
- Green + Warm Tones: Combine green with mustard yellow, rust orange, or burgundy for a cozy, autumnal vibe.
- Green + Cool Tones: Pair green with navy, lilac, or icy blue for a fresh, modern look.
- Green + Unexpected Pops: If you’re feeling bold, try green with pink or even red for a playful and unexpected twist. Don’t automatically rule out red and green together because it reminds you of Christmas, make sure to try all different shades of green instead.
Why Green Deserves a Spot in Your Closet
Green is more than just a color—it’s a mood booster, a versatile neutral, and a great way to add depth to your outfits. Whether you’re dressing up for a special occasion, running errands, or experimenting with new trends, green can elevate your style.
The best part? Green feels just as appropriate in every season. It’s an obvious choice for spring as well as winter and everything in between. It’s the color of nature, and we all know how nature is good for us.
Thrifty 6
With the fashion and textile industry being a major contributor to landfills and other environmental pollution, we decided to make it the mission of this little group to focus on second-hand items.
Since the prompt for this month was shawls, capes, and scarves, there should be a large variety of options to enjoy below.
Insider tip: If there aren’t many wonderful secondhand shops near you, then I included a list of online shops that I love at the end of this post.

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge
“I found this wintergreen duster style top with brown squiggles on a summertime thrifting adventure. Before the cold weather arrived, I never had the chance to wear it but I was able to style this lightweight top for winter with some creative layering. I added preloved boots, necklace, scarf, and earrings in various shades of brown and green to create a cool color combination that really stands out in the snow.”
Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style
“Ain’t this a colorful outfit for me! I love the pink jacket with the red boots. And although I am totally not a fan of red and green together, to Christmassy, it works somehow in this look. And you all know how I love black but I never wear these pre-loved trousers with black. Only with red, pink or yellow. So you could say these are my out-of-the-box trousers. It even has some embroidery on the left pocket.”
Emma of Style Splash
“For this month’s challenge I chose my second hand Marks and Spencer coat that I bought on eBay a few years ago. I’ve teamed it with black palazzo jeans (also M&S), a geometric print top from Warehouse and chunky Converse from Vinted.”
Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade
“The T6 theme for December is ‘Wintergreen’; a beautiful shade of green, somewhere between teal, peacock and pine…
…it’s a rich jewel colour with a distinct festive feel, perfect for a special Christmas Day outfit!
I found this vision in velvet at a Kilo Sale way back in January; it was love at first sight and I knew it would be my Christmas Day dress…
Soft velvet radiates light, gold trims bring opulence and the exquisite neck piece looks like it’s part of the dress…
I can’t wait to step out on Christmas morning – I hope the day is as bright and fresh as this dress!”
Sally of Within a World of My Own
“I love every shade of green in winter, but for a December outfit, I chose olive and sage greens with black and a pop of red. I can wear this thrifted black-and-olive leaf print dress in every season of the year, depending on how I layer it. The thrifted scarf is an amazing woven pattern with red, bright pink, orange, black, dark blue, and green tones that blend together beautifully.”
