How To DIY Your Boots With Scarves, Necklaces & More
When it comes to adding personality to your wardrobe, I’m a firm believer that our footwear can make a huge difference. That’s why I thought it would be fun to DIY your boots.
Not that I’m going to make my own boots, but I can decorate them like you wouldn’t believe. Whether you’re working with sleek ankle boots, edgy combat boots, or classic knee-high styles, a little creativity can make a big impact.
In this article, I wanted to explore how to DIY your boots into statement pieces using items you likely already have such as scarves, necklaces, clip-on earrings, and more!
While all of my examples are with shorter boots, this would be fabulous even with taller boots.
One advantage to trying out these ideas to DIY your boots is doing this can create new brain pathways as well as transform basic boots into outstanding boots.
We have styled booties many times in the past if you would like to see basic examples.

1. Adding Scarves to Your Boots
As I always say, scarves are magical pieces of fabric.
Why?
Because scarves are not just for your neck, they can be folded, twisted, and used in so many ways.
That’s why I figured I could add a pop of color to boots with them.
While I’ve only shown one idea, just think of all of the possibilities.
Insider tip: If you don’t have 2 scarves that are similar in color/design, thrift one and cut it in half so you have 2 matching scarves.
- Step on the Scarf: For my example above, I placed the scarf under my foot and then tied it up around the top of the ankle boot.
- Knotted Around the Ankle: A small silk scarf tied in a bow around the ankle of your boots is a chic way to add a feminine touch.
- Wrapped Around the Shaft: If you have taller boots, wrap a longer scarf around the shaft. Secure it with a simple knot or tuck the ends in for a seamless look.
- Braided Effect: Fold a thin scarf into a strip and braid it around the straps or buckles of your boots. This works especially well with ankle boots that have decorative straps or can string through the laces of combat boots.
- Laces: Switch out these fabric scarves (or ribbons–see below) as “shoelaces” for any footwear.
Insider tip: Another option instead of a “scarf” is to use ribbons. This could be leftover ribbons from packages or hair ribbons. Let your imagination soar with the possibilities.
2. Using Necklaces for Glamour
Transforming your boots with necklaces is a game-changer! This method is perfect if you want to add a little sparkle and sophistication.
BTW, your necklaces do NOT have to match on each boot. You could use a gold necklace on one boot and a silver one on the other.
Here are some ways to style your boots with necklaces:
- Draped Over Combat Boots: Layer chunky necklaces, pearls, or chains over combat boots for an edgy yet glamorous look. You can secure the ends with small elastic bands to prevent slipping. Or as in my case above, I secured them to the laces with a gold hoop earring and then placed a clip-on earring through that for “extra.”
- Wrapped Around the Ankle: For ankle boots, wrap a statement necklace or multiple strands of delicate chains around the ankle. This creates a jewelry-like effect that’s elegant and eye-catching.
Insider tip: This is the perfect way to feminize your combat boots.
3. DIY Your Boots with Clip-On Earrings
Clip-on earrings are a hidden gem in the world of DIY accessories. They’re easy to attach and remove, making them a flexible choice for decorating your boots.
Insider tip: I’ve used clip-on earrings even on sandals in the past. There are many other ways to use them other than just on your earlobes.
Here’s how you can use them:
- On the Buckles or Laces: Clip earrings onto the buckles of your boots or onto the laces for a touch of sparkle. This works particularly well for ankle and combat boots.
- At the Heel: Clip a pair of earrings at the back of the heel for a subtle but stylish addition.
- On Shaft: Attach clip-on earrings to the front shaft of your booties to give them extra decoration.
4. Kneesocks To Make Short Boots Look Tall
Don’t underestimate the power of socks and even tights when it comes to enhancing your boots. Not only does this add warmth to your outfit, it can change the overall look.
Insider tip: If you match a pair of kneesocks to your boots, they might even look like tall boots from a distance.
5. DIY Your Boots with Brooches and Pins
Brooches and pins are another way to bring a personal touch to your boots. They’re also easy to swap out, depending on your mood or outfit. Here’s how to use them:
- Pinned to the Shaft: If you have a pair of softer/fabric boots you can use a pin to decorate. Otherwise, magnets can be used.
- On the Laces: Thread brooches or pins onto the laces of your boots for an unexpected detail. Use a variety of colors and metals to create a unique look.
Insider tip: Magnetic brooches are a great option to DIY your boots and even on fabric that you don’t want to put a hole in. They can be found on Etsy or Amazon.
Final Thoughts
The idea to DIY your boots is an easy and affordable way to refresh your wardrobe and express your personal style. Whether you’re using scarves, necklaces, clip-on earrings, or other accessories, the possibilities are endless.
The best part?
These DIY enhancements are temporary, so you can switch up your look as often as you like. So dig through your jewelry box, raid your scarf collection, and get creative with your boots.
Another great reason to rummage through the secondhand stores for all kinds of jewelry, brooches, pins, and necklaces.
