Bedtime Routine For An Old Lady
Our Where Bloggers Live group is talking about our Sleep routine which I took to mean the bedtime routine for an old lady (that’s me).
I broke this down into things I do 100% of the time, things I do 90% of the time, and then the things I NEVER do.
Quote of the day: “You have a choice! You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off your face.” Anonymous
Bedtime routines may be something you think about more with kids, but I believe having a bedtime routine for an old lady can help you achieve great sleep.
While not every day is exactly the same, most of us do create a routine to make sure that our sleep is optimized.
Each of us has different priorities with our routines, and I’m definitely not saying that this old lady knows what she’s doing. But with the Where Bloggers Live prompt I wanted to share my bedtime routine for an old lady.

The Bedtime Routine for an Old Lady That Always Happens
There are just some things that no matter how late it is, or how tired I am, I need to get done.
- Remove makeup-there is never a night I go to bed with my makeup on. A clean face is an integral part of a bedtime routine for this old lady.
- Skincare-After my makeup is off, I ALWAYS make sure to use my eyelash serum, and my face serum and put on a moisturizer. I may not futz around with all of the extras when time is at a minimum, but these three things are always on the routine list.
- Teeth-As a retired dentist, it shouldn’t surprise you that I pick and brush absolutely every night without fail-and then either put in my nightguard or use my mouth tape.
Insider tip: I use an electric toothbrush which is timed for a 2-minute brushing. During these 2 minutes, I will either practice my balance or go into my closet and plan out my next day’s outfit.
Because I have the items for these things organized, I can get these done in a mere 5-10 minutes.
The Majority
While we have joked many times that we need almost an hour to get ready for bed, that’s because we deem our health to be a priority, more than watching TV or staying up late surfing social media.
This routine happens 90% of the time and is on top of what happens above. The bathroom routine is basically the same, but the extra activities are the exercises, stretching, and Piper time we do as part of our bedtime routine.
- Rolling and exercises-I have a list of exercises from PT, and I always use my foam roller for my legs, butt, and back.
- Red Light Therapy-After removing my makeup, and BEFORE adding serums and moisturizer, I will lie down with my red light mask.
- Neck Stretching-We bought a device from our chiropractor but also love this heated neck stretcher. You are supposed to lay on it for 20 minutes to try to get your neck back to the proper curve again.
- Massage Gun-This is one detail we have recently added to our bedtime routine because our muscles are so finicky lately.
- Audio-While laying on the neck stretcher (which is when my red light mask is on), we listen to podcasts, audiobooks, or other videos.
Insider tip: I could never see a difference with the red light mask until I used it on a clean face. In the beginning, I would apply my serum and moisturizer before putting on the mask.
When I Googled it, there were just as many articles saying to use it before moisturizer as after.
I feel like I have noticed more plumping and fewer wrinkles by using it on my skin without serum/moisturizer. Either that or it just takes older skin a long time before you see a difference.
One way that I check is to pinch the skin under my eyes and see how long it takes to return to normal.
Piper’s Bedtime Routine
Of course, even Piper gets in on a bedtime routine. Here’s what her’s includes:
- Teeth-We brush her teeth, or at least we try. It’s not her favorite but I believe it’s important.
- Paw pads-Her pads get very dry and irritated from all of the rock landscaping, so we put this on every evening.
- Brush–This brush is great at getting out Piper’s undercoat.
What is NEVER in my Bedtime Routine
- Watching/Listening to the News-I consider the news too negative for my personality. Do I miss current events this way? Maybe, but luckily my life is still wonderful without knowing.
There was a time when reading was part of a bedtime routine for this old lady. I do miss reading at night, but with all of the exercises instead, I squeeze in reading at dinnertime.
The ZZZs
The goal for anyone and everyone should be a bedtime routine that creates the best sleep and helps with your health.
As with everything, being open to change is key. Even a bedtime routine for an old lady should get switched up depending on what our body needs.
