Let’s Rewind to 2020.
Back then, I was deep into bodybuilding. One day, I got to compete in my college’s powerlifting competition. Even though powerlifting was a whole different game from bodybuilding, I practiced hard and was excited to give it a shot. But during the squatting part of the competition, something went wrong. The barbell pressed down on my neck, and in a rush of adrenaline, I somehow threw it off.
At first, I felt fine, so I continued with the rest of the competition, including the deadlift and bench press. However, soon after, things took a turn for the worse.
Within weeks, my neck started hurting. What I thought was a normal recovery quickly turned into something worse. My neck pain spread to my back, spine, and, eventually, my right arm. It became chronic, and no matter how many doctors I saw or medications I tried, nothing worked.
The Worst Part
I started experiencing PPPD (Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness). One day, I couldn’t stand still without feeling like I would fall. My vision went blurry, and everything around me seemed to move slowly. I felt disconnected from the world like I wasn’t in it.
I saw over 15 doctors, from neurologists to holistic practitioners, but no one could determine what was wrong. Every test came back normal.
I looked fine on the outside, but inside, I was battling dizziness and constant Anxiety.
The hardest part? The dizziness made even walking a struggle and sitting felt like I was floating.
Regain Bodily Control
I realized that no one was talking about this serious issue at the time, and there was no clear solution. So, I took matters into my own hands.
In 2022, I started researching PPPD, and I found that many others had the same experience. The common thread? Anxiety and panic attacks.
Mindset Strategy
While I’m not saying anxiety is the only cause, it played a role for me. And with the pandemic in full swing, I struggled even more. But instead of giving up, I turned to Yoga, Meditation, and breathwork to regain control of my mind. It was tough, but I managed.
During this period, I dropped out of college and focused on learning new skills. I earned certifications in ethical hacking and digital marketing. Freelancing gave me the flexibility to work from home, which was crucial for managing my health while still growing my skills.
Today, I work in copywriting and marketing. It hasn’t been easy, but it has been a journey of resilience, self-discovery, and personal Growth.
Exercise Mind, Body, and Spirit
If you’re someone who’s suffering from PPPD or dizziness, here are some exercises that can help:
For your mind:
- Meditation – Practice mindfulness and meditation to calm your thoughts and ease anxiety.
- Breathwork: Slow down breathing to calm your body and mind. Deep breathing can help lower your Stress and dizziness levels.
Physical Exercises:
- Daily Movement – Even if you feel dizzy, it’s essential to stay active. Daily movements help lower dizziness and improve balance. Staying still can make the symptoms worse.
- Gaze Stabilization Exercises – Focus on a stationary target while moving your head. These exercises help with balance and vertigo.
Gaze Stabilization Exercises:
- Start slowly: Begin with small head movements and gradually increase the speed.
- Keep your target in focus: The target should stay stationary and not become blurry as you move your head.
- Adjust The difficulty: Position the target against a busy background, such as a checkerboard. or move your head up and down.
- Take breaks: Rest between exercises. If you feel too dizzy, slow down or stop.
- Progress gradually: Start sitting, then move to standing with feet apart, together, or heel to toe.
- Work at your own pace: If you have physical limitations, do the exercises you can manage.
Other Helpful Exercises:
- Standing: Stand with your feet close together for 30 seconds. If you don’t feel steady, hold onto something.
- Walking: Walk in a straight line for 5 minutes, with one foot in front of the other. With every other step, try turning your head and eyes left and right.
- Target Shooting: Keep your head still while moving your eyes, or vice versa.
- Habituation: Expose yourself repeatedly to situations that make you feel dizzy, like complex patterns or busy environments.
- Balance Retraining: Stand on different surfaces and with narrower bases of support.
- Eyes Closed: Do balance exercises with closed eyes to use your inner ear balance structures.
