David B. Work and Play Columnist

I started working in my teens and am still going at it. Just because we reach a certain number does not mean we have to retire. With our knowledge and experiences, we can continue to grow businesses and mentor others to become greater than we ever were. That is why I am writing this column. My goal is to help others. Even if just one person reads my column and it helps change how they view the world, writing this column was worth it.

Sometimes a single word can explain years of confusion. That was exactly what happened when I came across the term “otrovert.” I had spent most of my life trying to figure out whether I was an introvert or an extrovert. Personality quizzes gave me different answers depending on the day. Friends described me as outgoing because I could confidently hold conversations, speak in front of groups, and enjoy social gatherings. Yet the same people couldn’t understand why I would disappear for a weekend afterward, ignore messages for a day, or crave complete silence after spending time with other…

Have you ever noticed how the moment you stop obsessing over something, it suddenly falls into place? That job you really wanted. The relationship you kept chasing. The elusive sense of purpose? The funny thing about life is that sometimes, the more desperately you look for meaning, the further away it feels. And yet, when you finally give up — when you stop gripping the steering wheel so tightly — life just sort of… works. Suddenly, you’re in the right place, doing the right thing, with the right people. No chase, no grind — just flow. It feels almost like a cosmic joke, doesn’t i…

By asking, “Why won’t I get hearing aids?” there’s probably a little voice in your head whispering excuses, fears, or doubts. You’re not alone. Millions of people across the globe struggle with hearing loss — and just as many resist getting help. The irony? Hearing aids have never been more advanced, more discreet, or more beneficial. And yet, people wait 5 to 7 years on average before they do anything about it. The stakes are higher than you think. Untreated hearing loss isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a serious quality of life issue. It can impact Relationships, work, me…

Life’s purpose is that inner compass that gives direction and meaning to everything we do. It’s the why behind our choices, the fuel behind our passion, and the anchor that keeps us grounded in times of chaos. It’s not necessarily about your job title, your role in the Family, or your bank balance. Rather, it’s the underlying reason you wake up in the morning and feel excited — or at least hopeful — about the day ahead. Think of your life purpose like the North Star. Sailors used it to navigate oceans because it was constant. Your purpose should feel like that — steady, deeply pe…

Ever feel like you’re running on a mental treadmill, always moving but never really getting anywhere? Like you’re stuck in this never-ending loop of thoughts, feelings, and regrets that just won’t quit? You’re not alone. So many of us carry the weight of our past like a heavy backpack we never take off. We replay old conversations, relive old mistakes, and react to today’s challenges with yesterday’s fears. But why? Why do we keep ourselves locked in a cage built from our own experiences? We don’t even realize we’re doing it most of the time. It’s like being a prisoner and…

Fatherhood looks simple from the outside. Society often paints the picture of a father as someone who works hard, pays bills, protects the family, and occasionally gives advice at the dinner table. But real fatherhood goes much deeper than that. A father shapes the emotional climate of a home. His words can become a child’s inner voice for the rest of their life. His silence can leave wounds just as deep as harsh criticism. Many men step into fatherhood believing that financial support alone equals Love, only to discover years later that children remember presence far more than paychecks. …

Ever had a lightning bolt moment where an idea just smacks you out of nowhere? Maybe in the shower, mid-conversation, or while walking your dog? You’re not alone. We’ve all had that experience when an idea seemingly appears from thin air. But where do ideas really come from? What makes them spark in our minds at the most unexpected times? Ideas are at the core of everything we create. From inventions to novels, businesses to art, everything begins with a thought. And yet, the origin of ideas remains one of the most fascinating and puzzling aspects of the human mind. They're mysterious. The…

We all like to think we’re good people. We donate when we can, say thank you to service workers, maybe even help someone in need once in a while. But there’s a deeper, more uncomfortable question lurking beneath all this: Are we really good if we ignore the pain of those who have the least? Whether we’re talking about the homeless man we pass on the street or the millions living below the poverty line, our response to their struggles says more about us than we’d like to admit. This isn’t just about doing the right thing for appearances or for karma points, it’s about the core of…

Everyone has worked under a boss who either inspired greatness or made you want to quit your job every Monday morning. The difference? It's not always about job titles or the number of degrees hanging on the wall. It’s about how they lead. So, what really makes a good boss? It’s a blend of emotional intelligence, clear communication, trust-building, and more. A good boss doesn’t just manage tasks, they guide people, shape culture, and ultimately drive the success (or failure) of a team. You might be surprised how much influence one person at the top can have on overall job satisfactio…

Estate planning—just the phrase sounds like something you can always “get around to later.” We tend to associate it with the elderly, the wealthy, or people who have everything perfectly organized. But estate planning isn’t about death—it’s about life. It’s about protecting your family, your assets, and your peace of mind long before the unexpected happens. When I realized I hadn’t done my estate planning until it was too late, the wave of regret was almost unbearable. I thought I had time. Don’t we all? I realized that life doesn’t wait for you to get your paperwork in …

Friendship doesn’t exist in a vacuum—it’s shaped by culture, expectations, and subtle social rules we often don’t even notice. From an early age, boys and girls are guided toward very different models of connection. Boys are often encouraged to bond through shared activities, sports, games, competition—while girls are typically steered toward communication, empathy, and emotional sharing. These early patterns don’t just disappear in adulthood; they quietly evolve into the foundation of how friendships are built and maintained later in life. If friendship were a house, many men are …

When people talk about luck, they often mean those unexpected moments that seem to tilt life in someone’s favor—or against it. Luck is typically defined as events that happen by chance, without clear intention or predictable cause. It’s the idea that something outside of our control influenced an outcome. Labeling events like luck might oversimplify reality. Many situations involve hidden factors like timing, preparation, and environment that we don’t immediately see. What feels like luck could be a complex mix of variables quietly aligning behind the scenes. In everyday life, luck bec…
