It used to be that there was only one way to get from Southwest Florida to Southeast Florida, and it took forever. In 1968 a new road opened that allowed for high-speed Travel coast-to-coast. You just had to not mind 80 miles of a dangerous two-lane road laden with snakes, panthers and alligators.

Original names tossed around were the Everglades Parkway, Swamp Pike and Alligator Lane but there was really only one choice.
