In this video, I take a reflective walk through my favorite local trail, Black Run Preserve, and share my gratitude for the community I call home. I have come to see my town not just as a place to live but as a “village” where everything I need is within reach and where real connections can flourish. Recently, I have felt drawn back to Quaker values—a guiding part of my past from teaching in a Quaker school. I revisited these values by attending a local Meeting for Worship, a peaceful, meditative gathering that renewed my sense of community and simplicity. The Quaker principles of SPICES—Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship—remind us to nurture a meaningful presence in our communities.
This journey has encouraged me to bring light to my village in simple yet impactful ways. Smiling at others, saying hello, giving compliments, holding doors, and being present—these small acts can build a sense of belonging. Let’s nurture our villages, wherever they may be, by bringing our light into each interaction. Together, we can create a healing space for our hearts and souls.
