Parkinson’s Today: An Educational Symposium, together with The Michael J. Fox Foundation, presented by The Auen Foundation. February 8, 2025

Panel 1 Discussion – Treatments & Standards of Care
Speakers: John Legge, MD & Jessica Shields, MD
Moderated by: Ethan Henderson, The Michael J. Fox Foundation

Overview: We’re going back to the basics with this panel of Parkinson’s medical experts to discuss how we treat Parkinson’s today – the tried-and-true, the latest-and-greatest, and the scams to avoid.

Panelists: Dr. John Legge – John Legge, MD is a board-certified Neurologist with fellowship-training in Movement Disorders. Dr. Legge emphasizes communication with his patients. “I listen to my patients tell their story. From that I find out what is important to them, which provides me the understanding on how best to guide their treatment plan.” He is located in Palm Springs at the Eisenhower Health Center at South Palm Canyon.

Panelist: Dr. Jessica Shields – a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon, earned her MD/PhD at LSU in New Orleans, focusing on non-invasive brain stimulation. She completed a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and specializes in deep brain stimulation, cervical spine surgery, cranial surgery, and spine Trauma. Dr. Shields prioritizes a collaborative, patient-centered approach to care. Outside of work, she enjoys family time, hiking, swimming, and cooking.

Host: Ethan Henderson – Ethan received his diagnosis of young-onset Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 2016. However, his deep involvement goes back to 2001 when his father was diagnosed with PD. Ethan became an ambassador to help educate the public, bring more resources to the community, and provide care for his father during his journey. He has participated in multiple clinical trials to further research for better treatments of PD.
