Three High-Impact Leadership Moves to Finish the Year Strong

Three High-Impact Leadership Moves To Finish The Year Strong &Raquo; Middle School Hallways 300X300 1When I was a high school principal, the final stretch of the school year always made me a little uneasy. After months of hard work, it was natural for some people—staff and students alike—to start easing off the gas. Energy would dip. Focus could wander. The finish line was in sight, and with it came the temptation to coast.

But I knew that some of the most important work happened in those last few weeks. How we finished the year set the tone for how we would start the next one. So I learned to be intentional. Instead of accepting a slow fade, I leaned into three leadership moves that helped keep our focus sharp and our culture strong right through the final bell.

Here are three things school leaders can start doing now that will still have a real impact before the year ends:

1. Be Present and Visible

The Leader Exudes Confidence And Calm Maintaining AWhen energy dips, leadership visibility matters more than ever. People need to see you. Not tucked away in your office answering emails, but out in the hallways, in the lunchroom, at recess duty, in classrooms. Presence communicates commitment. It reminds everyone that their work still matters, right up to the last day. It also gives you real-time insight into how students and staff are feeling and functioning. Sometimes just a smile, a high-five, or a “how’s it going?” is enough to lift someone’s spirits and refocus their attention.

2. Hold Strong to Expectations — and Reinforce Them

As leaders, we can’t let expectations drift. Reaffirm the standards you’ve worked hard to build all year. But don’t just enforce rules with redirection — balance it with recognition. Catch people doing the right things. Celebrate the small wins. Praise students for meeting expectations. Thank teachers for maintaining high standards. Recognition fuels momentum, and redirection keeps the train on the tracks.

3. Be in Classrooms, Giving Feedback, Coaching, and Cheering

Students still need encouragement. Coaching at this point in the year isn’t about introducing major new initiatives — it’s about reinforcing great practices, building confidence, and helping staff and students finish strong. A quick post-lesson conversation, a sticky note of appreciation, a short hallway celebration — these moments of feedback and positivity add up and can make a real difference in morale and effort.

Final Thoughts

Leadership doesn’t lighten up at the end of the year—it leans in. By staying present, holding firm to expectations, and showing up in classrooms as a coach and cheerleader, you can help your school community cross the finish line with pride, momentum, and a sense of accomplishment.

The way we finish matters. And it’s not too late to make a powerful difference.
