Captured Moments: A Choice Between Dreams and Duty with Author Melissa Clark Bacon

  1. Captured Moments: A Choice Between Dreams and Duty with Author Melissa Clark Bacon Teri M Brown 25:21

Guest host Carole O’Neill’s guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Melissa Clark Bacon, author of the book Through Her Lens. Melissa took her first photo with her grandfather’s Kodak instamatic camera, complete with a bluecoat flashcube. By high school, she transitioned to 35mm black and white film and a PentaxK-1000. When the four corners of single silver gelatin prints she made constrained her storytelling, she moved to collections of images and finally to the written word. It took years to complete her novel (ten if you must know) and the process left her longing to make, so she began teaching herself photographic transfer and hand applied emulsion processes along with handwork like embroidery. This exploration of traditional photo making and women’s work, combined with a female protagonist who invaded her waking and sleeping hours, shifted the focus of her work from children and the work of the hand to the undervalued and overlooked contributions of women.

In Carole’s book review, she stated Through Her Lens is a historical fiction by Melissa Bacon Clark. Millicent Trayford spent her days as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force assigned to Britain’s Central Intelligence Unit’s headquarters. As the newest member of Operation Crossbow, she worked reconnaissance in order to stop V1 flying bombs and V2 rockets before D-Day. But Millie’s real desire was to use her camera in the middle of the action to tell the story of women’s strength and vitality before their contributions in the war effort were lost to history.

Melissa Bacon Clark does a seamless job moving from fact to fiction as we imagine the horror of innocent families running for shelters as the sirens rang out against the backdrop of World War II. I thought I had my fill of WWII novels, but Through Her Lens is a very different look at a time in history worth reading, and the latest in the untold stories of the war’s female heroes.
