Why you need to know about furniture cruising

Furniture cruising, particularly in adults and seniors, can be a red flag for falls because it highlights a couple of potential instability issues:

* Balance problems: Furniture cruising relies on a steady external support to maintain balance. This suggests the person might struggle with standing and walking independently due to weak balance

* Reduced leg strength: Weak leg muscles, especially quadriceps and hamstrings, make it harder to propel yourself forward during walking. Furniture allows them to use their upper body strength to move along, compensating for the leg weakness.

Furniture cruising isn’t inherently bad, but it can be a sign of underlying weakness that increases fall risk. If you notice yourself furniture cruising:

* Talk to your doctor about any concerns with balance or walking.
* Consider physical Therapy to improve strength and stability.
* Make your home fall-proof (remove clutter, add grab bars).
