How To Wear Metallic Shoes
With our Ageless Style group, the prompt was colors for the holidays and I decided to color outside of the lines. I figured it would be fun to talk about how to wear metallic shoes as an option for the holidays.
But wait— they aren’t only for the holidays. They’re chic, versatile, and eye-catching—and yes, they work for women of all ages all year long!
Quote of the day: “The mind is what the mind is fed.” David Schwartz
Metallic shoes are not just for special occasions. Gone are the days when glitter and shine were relegated to eveningwear. Today, metallic footwear can be worn with casual outfits, office ensembles, and even everyday errand-running looks.
Their reflective quality adds depth and interest to any outfit, and they work as a neutral color—pairing effortlessly with almost anything in your closet. Think of metallics as your new best friend when it comes to both practicality and pizzazz.
Insider tip: While it’s best to NOT categorize our clothing as much as possible, for your footwear, the best way to think about them depends on their heel height, comfort factor, and seasonality…not their color or material.

Charlotte: Silver Flats
My mom is showcasing how to wear metallic shoes with this pair of silver flats that blend nicely with her grey pants.
She opted to wear this pair of silk pants that she’s worn with a red velvet jacket in the past.
Charlotte is wearing a bold neon lime green jacket layered over classic trousers. It’s simple yet striking, and the silver flats are the perfect finishing touch. What makes this outfit work so well is the balance between the bright pop of color and the grounding neutral tone of the shoes. The silver metallic flats not only complement the modern feel of the jacket but also bring a touch of elegance without being overpowering.
Why It Works:
- Neutral Balance: The silver metallic flats act as a grounding neutral against the bold neon yellow jacket. They provide contrast without overwhelming the outfit, allowing the bright jacket to shine.
- Elegant Simplicity: The metallic flats add a subtle touch of glamour to an otherwise classic outfit of trousers and jacket. This understated elegance makes the look versatile and polished.
- Age-Inclusive Style: Silver flats are both practical and stylish, demonstrating that metallic footwear works beautifully for all ages without compromising comfort.
Details:
- My mom found this jacket when we had our scavenger hunt at Goodwill this summer. THE BEST PART? We found out it had been donated by another friend that we knew.
- Charlotte said she paid more for the jewelry in this look than the clothing since all clothing was thrifted.
- I love how she added in a purse that is a totally different color. It’s very modern that way.
Lesley: Metallic Wedges
For Lesley’s idea of how to wear metallic shoes, she paired these silver peep-toe shoes with her jeans.
But just because she styled jeans doesn’t mean she looks sloppy. Instead, she created a very glamorous look.
She wore a black velvet blazer and white top making this outfit a masterclass in casual sophistication. The white scarf adds texture and a touch of softness, while the metallic shoes tie the outfit together, adding just the right amount of lightness and sparkle.
Why It Works:
- Metallic wedges elevate casual looks:Â Metallics instantly make denim feel dressier. The wedges add sass making the outfit versatile for both daytime outings and dinner dates.
- Play with textures:Â The combination of velvet, denim, and metallic leather is visually interesting, proving that mixing fabrics can create depth in your outfit.
- Keep it monochromatic with a twist:Â The silver shoes work harmoniously with the black and white palette, creating a cohesive look while still adding a bit of sparkle.
Details:
- Notice that the vintage purse doesn’t “match” but goes so well with all the glamorous items.
- Wearing sparkle creates intentionality with the silver shoes.
- Lesley said that she originally bought the shoes to go with a Halloween costume. But now they work for any day.
Jodie: Glitter Booties
My take on how to wear metallic shoes was to include these silver sequin booties. In real life, these glitter and shine like you wouldn’t believe, and I had compliments from men and women alike.
I decided to wear my floral midi dress that I’ve had for ages. Feel free to check out how I’ve styled it in the summer. But knowing it was chilly, I wanted a cropped sweater or cardigan for this day.
I couldn’t find an option that was colorful and short enough, so I used my upside-down trick with this bright yellow cardigan.
Insider tip: Here’s a video on how to transform a sweater or vest from long to short.
Why It Works:
- Contrast is key:Â The rich burgundy tones of the skirt provide the perfect backdrop for the glitzy booties. The combination of earthy colors and metallic shine creates a balanced, high-fashion feel.
- Bold colors and bold shoes can coexist: The bright yellow jacket may seem like it’s competing with the booties, but the key is in the proportions. The cropped length of the jacket allows the outfit to remain balanced, while the glitter booties ground the look.
- Adds personality: Let’s be honest—sparkly booties scream fun and individuality. They’re a perfect example of how fashion can (and should!) be playful.
Details:
- When you create a cropped sweater with my upside-down trick, you can sometimes button the buttons at the bottom, but today I used a brooch to hold it together.
- This faux fur purse is perfect for the holidays, and I pinned 3 different bow brooches on it.
- My 3 bow brooches are a combination of gold and silver. Don’t be afraid to mix your metals.
Styling Metallic Shoes for Everyday Wear
You might be wondering how you can incorporate metallic shoes into your everyday wardrobe if you’re not dressing up for a photo shoot or special occasion. Here are some general tips to help you style metallic shoes no matter the occasion:
1. Use Metallics as a Neutral
One of the best things about metallic shoes is that they act as a neutral color. Silver, gold, and even rose gold can be paired with most outfits in the same way you’d style black, brown, or nude shoes. The added benefit? They make your outfit look more polished and intentional.
Insider tip: Metallic shoes are the perfect way to counteract frump. If you’re worried about an outfit seeming frumpy, add metallic, cute shoes and you’re good to go.
2. Pair Metallics with Prints
Don’t shy away from pairing metallic shoes with printed pieces. Whether floral, animal print or geometric patterns, metallic shoes provide a cohesive touch without clashing. The reflective quality of metallics complements the busy nature of prints.
3. Wear Metallic Shoes Casually
Metallic shoes aren’t just for fancy events! There are many casual options available that can complete your outfit and make you smile.
- Sneakers
- Sandals
- Loafers
- Cowboy boots
