What Is Galantine’s Day & Ways To Celebrate It

The word Galentine’s Day first was heard in February of 2010 during an episode of Parks and Recreation by Amy Poehler.

In the episode, she says

“What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus, frittatas. —”Galentine’s Day,” Parks and Recreation, 2010.

So although it’s not an official holiday, people everywhere embrace the very idea of a holiday for celebrating friendships. It is traditionally geared towards celebrating the women in your life (moms, sisters, daughters, nieces or friends). But over time, it evolved to included anyone you want to hang out with, regardless of gender.

I have been so very lucky to have great friends in my life and the really true ones are the ones that have no demands; the ones that you can pick up where you left off, the ones that will ask how you are and actually wait for you to answer.

Personally, although I haven’t celebrated Galentine’s Day, I do love getting together with my girlfriends when I can. A lot of us are in seasons of our life that make it difficult to regularly get together with our friends; I’m no exception. However, when schedules allow and time permits, there’s nothing better than sitting down with a true friend. You know the ones: the ones you can laugh with or pour your soul out to and there’s absolutely no judgement.

If you’re lucky enough to have genuine friendships in your life, I’d like to give you some ideas on how to celebrate your friendships. Remember, honoring friendships can be with friends, your sister, your mom, your grandma (or Gigi) or your daughter and/or daughter-inlaws.

Here are some ideas for Galentine’s Day. If that day doesn’t work for you or your friends, schedule it for another time to celebrate your friendships – whenever you have some time to spare with your girlfriends. Here are some ideas of things you can do with your friends:

Take a cooking class together

Do a bible study together

Hike, walk or take an Exercise class together

Have some friends over for happy hour serving wine and a charcuterie board. Nana Alison wrote a great blog on charcuterie boards. Click here to read it

Host a brunch at your home

Why not take a mixology class together. This can connect your friends that live near and far using Skype or Facetime

Go out for pedicures and/or manicures or host at home

Have a craft night

Have some friends over to make diy scrubs and have a home spa day. Click here for diy scrubs

Do a Skype call with your friends that live far away

Send a card to your friend to let her know how much she means to you.

There are many benefits to having genuine friendships and if you missed my blog post on what those benefits are, you can read about them here.

Good friends are like stars. You don’t always see them

but you know they are there.

Happy Galentine’s Day!Love,

Gigi Susie
