Life and Business Require Unlearning, Learning, and Relearning for Growth

Relearning for Growth

Learning is a continuous process from cradle to grave.  It widens your mental horizons, changes perceptions, and expands your intellectual base. According to Stephen R Covey, one of the seven habits of highly effective people is learning, plus continuous learning. Continuous learning is an Exercise to your mind, as physical exercise is to your body.  Focusing on physical, intellectual, and spiritual learning is necessary to succeed in life.

Continuous learning keeps you updated on the latest developments, changes your mindset with the times, sheds some of your old inhibitions, hesitations, and habits, and helps you constantly reinvent yourself. Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D., offers our guest blog, “Life and Business Require Unlearning, Learning, and Relearning for Growth.”

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” —Alvin Toffler.

Continuous Learning

“View life as a continuous learning experience.” —Denis Waitley.

Let us appreciate the fact that everything starts small.  It is human nature that none becomes excellent overnight.  Ongoing efforts require much energy, including trial, error, and retrying.  Everyone must start small.  Therefore, daily learning is needed, but it isn’t just about books.  Learning includes observation, reading, experimentation, practice, training, and retrying. Usually, people believe reading is the final answer—many people with less literacy achieved success learning through their observation and trial and error methods.  If learning is the end, there are many means.  Whatever constructive means individuals adopt, it should lead to healthy learning.

Case Study of Ron

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes.” —Marcel Proust.

Ron worked in one industry for 25 years.  He decided to share his knowledge, experience, and expertise with the student community.  Therefore, he joined as a faculty member at an engineering college.  Having worked for 25 years in the industry, he initially found it difficult to get along within the educational institution.  However, his passion for teaching students compelled him to unlearn some of the habits not required for the educational institution.  He was ruthless as a manager and leader in the industry while being highly task-oriented and aggressive.

The educational institution needs participants to be patient when handling students. Teaching also requires a lot of reading. Ron struggled to recall his old days when he prepared for his academic examinations. His new role required him to prepare more than he had done during his student life.

However, his passion for teaching made him prepare for long hours. He prepared notes by himself, referring to numerous books. Gradually, he began developing his content with several examples so students could understand easily. It took him around three months to unlearn some of his industry habits and learn new teaching tools and techniques.

Thorough reading and passion made Ron unlearn, learn, and relearn several things to become a successful faculty member. Ron also innovated his teaching methodologies by blending his industry experience with his academic experience.  Finally, he became a successful faculty member by unlearning, learning, and relearning.

Age and Ego for Learning

“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” —Chinese Proverb.

Ego and age should not be hurdles to learning. We can learn from anybody, whether they are older or younger than us. What is essential is to recognize that the other person has specific competencies, skills, and abilities that we lack.

Knowledge can be acquired by respecting others’ potential.  Some people hesitate to consult younger people as their ego prevents them. Such filters within the mind should be eliminated. A person named John joined a research company.  He had 25 years of experience in the industry but was new to the research company.  He had a huge appetite for learning and growing.  He did not hesitate to learn the ropes of the research from younger people.  Finally, he rose in the research department quickly as he was not self-centered in consulting and welcomed insights from younger people.  John combined his previous experience with existing knowledge and outsmarted others rapidly in the research firm.  What is needed is to block the ego, which, most of the time, is a stumbling block for learning.

Tips to Unlearn, Learn and Relearn

Have a firm and flexible mindset. Remember that you are still learning and evolving. Don’t take your learning for granted. The learning that takes place during your life may be subject to change. The globe was initially believed to be flat, but subsequent learning confirmed that it is round. Therefore, have a flexible and open mindset toward learning.

Try to associate with intellectual friends. You can share your knowledge with them, and learning can be reciprocated. Creating an intellectual ambiance can lead to confirmed learning. Besides, it broadens your knowledge base. When you discuss with them, the hidden potential within you will surface, and you may share the same with them. When others challenge your ideas, you tend to think deeper, resulting in creativity and Innovation.

Mentoring will help you to communicate effectively.  It also allows you to explore and examine your mentees.  It is a two-way communication where you can share your knowledge, expertise, and experience.  Also, you can benefit from your mentees’ practical experiences and learning.  Apart from grooming and guiding your mentees toward their career success, you can cross-check your knowledge from their experiences. If there are any variations, the same can be unlearned and learned.

Get continuous feedback from your well-wishers and experienced people. Constructive feedback helps you take the proper steps for remedial action and improvement. If you make any deviations in learning, you can unlearn them. In this process, consult the right experts on the topic. Finally, be passionate while unlearning, learning, and relearning. The passion must come from the core of your heart.

Elinor Stutz International Best-Selling Author

Elinor Stutz broke through barriers long before doing so was popular. Against all the odds, she defied the theme “women can’t sell” to become the top producer at every company she ever worked for, ignoring attempts to get her to quit.

Eleven years later, I lay motionless on a stretcher with an irreparably broken neck. Two visions appearing before me, and a brilliant gold light encasing my entire body, gave me a reason to believe I would recover. I wholeheartedly knew I was about to empower audiences far and wide. At the moment, I negotiated a full recovery with the promise to be of service. The surgeon and hospital staff anointed me with the title “The Walking Miracle.”

As the CEO of Smooth Sale, Stutz adapted the motto, “Believe, Become, Empower.” Believe in yourself; Become the person you envision; Empower your audience to do the same. Stutz is on the Social Media Committee for Inclusion Allies Coalition devoted to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
