Forget the Triggers: Let’s Seek the Glimmers

The little things? The little moments? They aren’t little.

–Jon Kabat-Zinn

In our fast-paced, often overwhelming world, it’s easy to get caught in a cycle of reactivity. We become attuned to our “triggers” – those external stimuli that spark negative Emotions, Stress, and Anxiety. We brace ourselves, anticipating the next thing that will set us off.

But what if we could shift our focus? What if we could consciously train our minds to seek out the opposite of a trigger: the glimmer?

Glimmers are the subtle yet profound moments of joy, happiness, peace, or gratitude that pepper our day. It’s the warmth of the sun on your skin, the unexpected kindness of a stranger, the comforting aroma of your morning coffee, the sound of birdsong, a genuine smile from a loved one. These seemingly small instances often pass unnoticed as our attention is drawn toward potential threats or looming tasks.

However, the power of the glimmer lies in its cumulative effect. Just as repeated exposure to triggers can condition our nervous system towards heightened reactivity, intentionally noticing and savoring glimmers can rewire our brains for positivity. By actively seeking these moments, we train our minds to become more attuned to the good that already exists around us.

This isn’t about ignoring challenges or suppressing difficult emotions. It’s about creating a balance. By consciously shifting some of our mental energy towards identifying glimmers, we build resilience. We cultivate an inner wellspring of positive feelings that can help us navigate stressful times with greater ease and perspective.

Start small. Throughout your day, make a conscious effort to identify one or two glimmers. Pause for a moment to truly experience the sensation. Notice the physical feelings and emotions that arise. Perhaps jot them down in a journal. As you practice this simple act, you’ll find that these tiny moments begin to appear more frequently. Your brain, trained to seek them out, will become a magnet for the subtle beauty and goodness that surrounds you.

It’s time to consider: instead of constantly bracing for the next trigger, what if we actively sought the next glimmer?

Begin today. Open your eyes, awaken your senses, and actively seek the glimmers in your world. Let them illuminate your path toward a brighter, more resilient you.
