The “sandwich generation” has long referred to those juggling the needs of both growing children and Aging parents, often at the cost of their own time and energy. I’ve experienced this twice in my own life—once in my 30s with my Mom’s Cancer and most recently with my Dad’s heart attack. It’s the drop everything, come now moments that cause Stress of reorganizing your life and your kids’ schedules but the aftermath of care is so much on the women who care for everyone.
The thing that suffers in these times is women’s careers- missing work, unable to Travel or other ways we get docked from the promotions Once we women pick our heads up, we realize there is more to life’s most important days than negotiating with the office tyrant or soothing the unmotivated cubicle baby whose work you take on.
But there’s a new kind of sandwich generation emerging—one defined not by Family roles, but by Clarity and purpose. I’m coining the deeper generation black hold—-the Career Sandwich.
In between the bookends of Parenting and Caregiving, there is a layer often forgotten—we want more from life than a 401K—we crave purpose and impact. Gen X is incredibly responsible, wanting to make mortgage payments, get our parents to physical Therapy and enroll our kids in enough activities to keep them off ipads.
How are we supposed to loosen our grip on Money, stability and the fun the next generations are having skipping around companies and freelancing from coffee shops?
Career Sandwichers, mostly Gen X and older Millennials, watched our parents and grandparents hold the same job for a lifetime with a corporate ladder rung. The average Baby Boomer held just three jobs throughout adulthood. Contrast that with Gen Z, who are projected to hold a bold 17.5 jobs over their careers.
So where does that leave you? Confused, stuck and foggy.
You know where you are today—perhaps crushing life but work is a zoo or the other way around. You might feel burnt out, tired, and unfulfilled. Part of your career might have been the purpose you craved without the salary.
What the Career Sandies know —nothing is perfect and it doesn’t have to be forever but there is more to life than a career climb up a ladder that has no rungs.
Naming the problem of feeling stuck between all heart or all money is only half the equation; the other half is knowing how to unwind years of programming from our parents’ way of operating.
You’re caught between two realities: the expectation to be stable and strategic like the generations before you, but also nimble, adaptive, and constantly evolving like the generations coming up behind you. You may crave clarity in your decisions, purpose in your actions, and mastery in your work—but you’re also expected to pivot, reskill, and remain relevant in a workplace that’s moving faster than ever.
It’s a strange middle ground—sandwiched between loyalty and reinvention. If you’re feeling stretched, uncertain, or even a little lost, you’re not alone.
In “Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected” by Radha Agrawal, she modifies the original hierarchy of needs to include a life purpose. We can do work but we crave doing impactful work—1.1, small groups or even in large companies where your mission aligns with your own values. How we find our mission in life is a blueprint we create individually. Unfortunately for the Career Sandwichers there are very few instances to mimic in the boomers before us. We navigate this self care, purposeful path as newcomers. Quieting our monkey minds and hearing our desires, must come from the inside out.
The good news? This moment can be powerful. The Career Sandwich invites you to reflect, realign, and redefine what success looks like on your terms in the short term. You get to blend Wisdom with clarity, depth with curiosity, and experience with a fresh sense of purpose.
Ways to Find Clarity and Purpose in the Career Sandwich:
Communicate fears & desires: Can you find a coach or a friend to discuss these struggles? Community is a great brainstorming resource. When you know what you need, talking to a spouse, family or your network is where the magic happens. Where do you want to go next? How do you want to grow in this phase?
Define Your Priorities: What is MOST important in your work—Growth, financial Security, fun, or one-on-one connections?
Break the Mold: How can you detach from your parents’ perception of career success that may no longer serve you?
This is your chance to turn a chaotic middle into a journey of clarity and purpose. Ready to take the first bite?
