Somehow, over time, many people believe they need to be perfect or else stupidity is theirs. Why? The collective criticism heard over time builds up to a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. And then it’s a downhill slide as one will beat themselves up daily until they tell themselves, ‘It’s no use; I may as well give up.’

Perception and Facts
Often, it takes many years to realize that the people who put others down are jealous of their talent. Sadly, after hearing the negative commentary non-stop for many years, one begins to believe what one hears. The best remedy is to converse with oneself to identify the common thread of insults and consider how to fix the issue.
Drowning
Over time, harassment often makes one almost silent and afraid to express one’s thoughts. Worse, accepting non-communication further harms the communicative spirit. For business, withdrawing from communication can make us feel like drowning in a swamp. It’s best to seek professional help the moment the realization hits.
My entry into professional sales exponentially expanded the need for help with communications. I wasn’t allowed to train because it wasn’t worth the cost of training a female. Yet, it was my first time in the profession, and I had no clue what to say or how to express what was necessary.
Life Jacket
Almost magically, someone suggested that I take a public speaking class. Many excuses came to mind, but the overriding one was to be a good role model for our young family. This scary step set me on the right course for the remaining years of my career, which continues today.
I began the public speaking course by being afraid to announce my name on the first night. However, I embraced the suggestions, practiced them, and finally became the grand prize winner at the end of the course. Genuinely connecting with people and groups is a valuable skill for all endeavors. My clientele all referred to me as ‘a breath of fresh air!’
Sharing the Life Jacket Spirit
After eleven successful years in sales, I began my third venture into entrepreneurship. Initially, I taught sales teams and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley better communication skills for closing sales. Later, I delivered inspirational and motivational keynotes at conferences, with the underlying message, ‘Never give up; find a better way!’ The thunderous standing ovations let me know that the audience was motivated to do so.
Career Review
It’s wise to consider how we arrived where we are now frequently and the lessons we learned along the way. Often, there is a common theme among the lessons. It may be worthwhile to consider sharing what we learn over time to encourage others to believe in themselves and, instead of self-criticism, move toward self-improvement.
Story-Sharing
The one vital skill I took away from the early public speaking class was to be an avid storyteller. But it isn’t just to share our unique story but to encourage those we encounter to do the same. It is the exchange of experiences that increases trust in one another. For business, trust is the essence of Smooth Sale, which encourages returning and referring clientele.

We each have the discretion to complain about circumstances and give up or realize the help we may need to climb out of the perceived sinkhole. Selecting the latter method is almost like our rescue team as we begin to live the life we originally envisioned. It all starts with belief in oneself and stating, yes, I Can! – and then doing whatever it may take to make the improvements and achieve the success that you desire.
