Supporting Families Through Baby Loss {Re-release}

  1. Supporting Families Through Baby Loss {Re-release} Irene Weinberg 1:06:31

In honor of Baby Loss Awareness Week this year, we revisit Sherokee Ilse’s poignant journey. After experiencing the heart-wrenching loss of three babies—through miscarriage, a full-term stillborn son, and an ectopic pregnancy—Sherokee became a mentor for grieving parents, helping them navigate their deep anguish and despair.

As a mother of two living sons and a pioneer in perinatal loss and bereavement, Sherokee has authored 18 books and booklets on loss and healing, including her most renowned work, Empty Arms: Coping with Miscarriage, Stillbirth, and Infant Death. With over 30 years of expertise, she has passionately spoken, trained, and consulted worldwide on topics such as miscarriage, stillbirth, NICU losses, sudden infant death, child loss, and general bereavement.

A wonderful story I wanted to share about this interview is that it inspired a woman named Julie Reskakis to reach out to her, affirming that this was the work Julie felt called to do. After training with Sherokee for seven months, both online and in person in Pittsburgh, Julie recognized Sherokee’s program as the gold standard in the field of perinatal bereavement. Upon becoming certified, she proposed a perinatal bereavement program at Holy Name Medical Center, aimed at supporting families through their loss and helping them create precious memories in the time they have together.

Now a member of the staff on the Labor and Delivery unit, Julie feels honored to do this vital work. She emphasizes the profound impact of the podcast and Sherokee’s Wisdom, which have changed her life and the lives of the families she serves.
