Falls Are Serious and Costly One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury. Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). In 2015, the total medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion. Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs. Who We Are: Silver Spaces is a leading software company dedicated to improving the safety, security, and overall well-being of the elderly within their homes. How are they connected? As the Baby Boomer generation ages, it becomes more and more evident that appropriate, accessible housing stock that fits the needs of the older adult is shrinking – rapidly. There is and never will be one solution – but that is a good thing because not all older adults have the same requirements for their residences. But what has turned the Boomer generation and their children upside down is the “boomerang effect!” There was a time when adult children moved away from home, only to move back in at some point. Due to many factors, parents are now finding that... Continue Reading
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), data consistently shows that cold weather kills more people then hot weather. This may be surprising to most Texans, however, during the Texas winter storm in February 2021, 246 people lost their lives, many to hypothermia. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), states that older adults are at an increased risk of hypothermia because their body’s response to cold can be diminished by underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, medications and aging itself. Hypothermia can develop in older adults after even relatively mild exposure to... Continue Reading
San Francisco is caught in the vortex of two powerful forces: a fast-growing retiree population and rising rents. Residents over 60 are expected to make up a fourth of the city’s residents by 2030, according to this video project for The San Francisco Standard by Chris Chang, a student in the University of California, Berkeley’s graduate journalism school. And San Francisco rents, after collapsing during the pandemic as people left the city, are on the rise again. A one-bedroom apartment is going for $3,100 per month – second only to New York City – despite a rent control policy that limits... Continue Reading

Searching on your own for a senior living community can be a time-consuming and frustrating endeavor. All too often our agency receives calls from seniors or their adult children who feel completely overwhelmed and frustrated in their search for a senior living community that fits their needs and budget. Here’s a scenario that plays out over and over: An adult daughter posts on Facebook asking for senior living recommendations for her dad. Dad is very social and independent, he only needs meals and the opportunity to make new friends. The responses the daughter receives are all over the place,... Continue Reading

You know that your body needs exercise, but did you know it’s CRUCIAL for your brain as well? I recently interviewed Ron Nevelow, with Enlighten Senior Care on my podcast, and he shared the 5 things we all should be doing to work toward (and keep) a healthier brain. Exercise – 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, enough to keep your heart at an elevated rate. Walking is the #1 way to do this, especially for older adults, followed by swimming. Social Interaction – when you interact with people socially you use different parts of your brain. Note having a conversation with a new person will challenge... Continue Reading
I love Christmas! The lights, decorations, parties…but my favorite part is the opportunity to help others, especially seniors who are in need, and to bring a bit of joy into their lives. Last week we worked with Meals on Wheels of Denton County to help raise donations for their Senior Paws program… or “Santa Paws” as we called it. Seniors receiving Meals on Wheels are typically on limited incomes, and many have furry companions – dogs or cats. There is a need for dog/cat food, treats, toys, dog beds, etc. so we decided to host two fundraisers last week. People were... Continue Reading
Grab bars. Two simple words that one may assume describes a common solution to stabilizing a body position movement. While that is still true, the solutions to that stability have drastically changed in the last decade. What I find interesting is how little most people actually know about the “realm” of grab bars. For instance, I have clients who may need them, but say they don’t want them installed because they are fearful they will be seen as “old” people. This tells me they have not seen how this former “tube” has changed dramatically, not only in form and function, but... Continue Reading
