1. Episode#16: You cannot lead people if they don't trust you. Deborah Brown-Volkman 20:59

“Today’s leaders have a responsibility to inspire the leaders of tomorrow.” Lieutenant Colonel Oakland “Oak” McCulloch. Oak has lived his life by this motto. Throughout his decorated 23-year career in the United States Army and various civilian jobs that followed, McCulloch has lived a life of servant leadership. Experiences from his childhood and adult careers frame the leadership legacy he has personally passed down. As Oak likes to say, “Great leadership handed down from generation to generation is what develops great nations.”

How did “Oak” go from Lieutenant Colonel to Leadership Coach? He said it was an easy transition. Oak was once a hard-working young man who rose through the ranks. Mentoring was a key factor in his success. He believes in giving back and the importance of developing the next generation of leaders. If we don’t, we will reap what we sow.

Oak shared with me his simple everyday tips for leadership success which include, getting out from behind your desk, showing empathy, and never turning down a chance to lead. Theory is one piece of the pie, but doing is how you really learn.
