100 Years of Radio in San Antonio: Talk Radio

2022 was the year San Antonio celebrated 100 years of radio broadcasting.

To mark the occasion, award winning PBS affiliate, KLRN-TV, in partnership with the Society of San Antonio Radio Broadcasters, produced a series of vignettes of significant historical San Antonio radio eras in 10 categories. Hosted by Sonny Melendrez, the series was produced by Shari St. Clair and written by Liz Houston, Woody Roberts Tim McKee, St. Clair and Melendrez. Executive producer is Arthur Emerson.

Talk Radio arrives in San Antonio in 1966 when longtime WOAI announcer Allan Dale introduces “The Talk of San Antonio” arguing controversial issues with newsmakers and listeners alike.

As music radio migrates to the FM dial, Talk Radio expands on the AM dial.

In the 70s Carl Wigglesworth joins Mary Denman on WOAI’s “Morning Magazine”.

In the 80s Pat Rodgers hosts ‘Cover Story,’ a first-of-its kind, hour-long talk show driven by headlines of the day.

In the 90’s Eliza Sonneland becomes KTSA’s voice of morning talk.

Top 40 legend Ricci Ware introduces talk radio to KTSA in 1983 when he teams with his son Trey as the “Ware Pair.”
