Serenaded at Salón Tenampa, Mexico City

Last March, my husband, Phil, took me to Salón Tenampa in Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico City.

He used to go there with friends and colleagues when he was a photojournalist living in CDMX in his early thirties. He told me it has changed a lot since then, but it still felt special.

Plaza Garibaldi is known for its mariachis, and @salontenampa has been there since the 1920s. We didn’t have reservations, but because it was just the two of us, we got in pretty fast and got a booth.

The food was wonderful, the service was next level, and it felt nostalgic.

Then Phil asked the mariachis for “Por un amor,” which I did not expect. He sings that song sometimes, and it always irks me because the chorus is “pobre de mí” (poor me). But hearing it sung by mariachis, with all that feeling, was something else. It was even romantic coming from Phil.

If you go, bring cash to request songs from the mariachis, although many may take electronic payment too. They really do give it their all.

Have you ever gone somewhere with your partner that felt like stepping into their past?
