I was showing my 20-year-old niece around South Beach when we came upon Muscle Beach, right by Ocean Drive. We had been walking in the heat all morning and had just eaten lunch before I decided to try a few pull-ups.
I immediately started making excuses to her, saying I could only do three instead of my usual five. And she said, “I’m 20, and I can’t even do one.”
Of course she could if she trained. But that wasn’t really the point.
The point is that it feels exhilarating to come across a bar anywhere and know I can pull myself up, especially when just two years ago I was only beginning to train for my first pull-up while recovering from a torn rotator cuff.
Age is definitely not just a number. Aging brings real changes. Joints and tendons need more care, recovery matters, and some things simply take longer.
But I am not taking this aging journey lying down. I’m thrilled to be able to show younger people, including my niece, what may still be possible at my age.
How are you defying stereotypes about aging?
