Focusing On What'S Left: Person-Centered Dementia Care &Raquo; Focus

Focusing on What’s Left: The Heart of Person-Centered Dementia Care” emphasizes a shift in perspective towards recognizing and nurturing the remaining abilities and strengths of individuals living with dementia. This approach prioritizes dignity, empathy, and the preservation of identity, fostering a supportive environment where individuals can thrive despite cognitive challenges. By giving focus on what remains rather than dwelling on losses, caregivers can enhance quality of life and promote meaningful connections with those in their care.

By centering attention on the capabilities and interests that persist, caregivers can tailor activities and interventions to align with each individual’s unique needs, preferences, and strengths. Targeted focusing enables caregivers to cultivate moments of joy, purpose, and connection, enhancing the overall well-being of those living with dementia. By acknowledging and amplifying what remains, Focusing on What’s Left” promotes a more holistic and enriching approach to dementia care, centered on the enduring essence of each person.

That’s the topic of this week’s guest with The Dementia Nurse, Donna Marentey

After helping care for her grandmother who had vascular dementia, Jennifer realized her Mother was showing signs of early onset Alzheimer’s. After the death of her father in 2017 Jennifer went searching for answers to many of the common questions and Alzheimer’s caregiver faces. Being a busy entrepreneur Jennifer realized that a podcast would be the easiest way to learn more about caregiving while completing other tasks.

Sadly, in late 2017 she only found one and it didn’t quite address what she was looking for, so she did the next best thing, and started her own. The Fading Memories podcast is now in it’s fourth year and despite the death of her Mom in March 2020, Jennifer is still talking to caregivers and still learning how to be an excellent caregiver. On the podcast she discusses caregiving, brain health, self-care and how to age well.
