This is a chronic medical condition that typically develops in adulthood, usually between the ages of 20 and 50. Here are some key points about AERD:
Most people with AERD have asthma that often does not respond well to conventional treatments. Recurrent nasal polyps are common, leading to chronic sinus infections and a loss of sense of smell. Sensitivity to NSAIDs, such as increased nasal congestion, frontal headache, sinus pain, sneezing, cough, wheezing, and chest tightness.
About 75% of patients with AERD develop mild-to-moderate respiratory reactions when they drink alcohol.
