The second question I keep getting is: how did she turn a podcast into a one woman show? (I’ll share more here)
The first is always: how was it? (inspiring, funny, really really funny, uplifting, & heartfelt)
Mel herself was exactly what you’d expect with her deep radio voice, black outfit that blended in with the background, her blonde hair, dark glasses and golf belt buckle are all that stood out. A simple backdrop of two screens and a few lights created a digital marketers dream.
Jenny, a soul sister, met me at dinner beforehand for a night of
laughter | tears | gasps | giggles | clapping.
The emotional arc of the show matters more than i anticipated. I wasn’t planning on attending, giving Mel more Money that I’ve given her already. I listen to some of her podcast episodes, read all of her books and watched too many reels to count. I do trust her (giving her a big pass when she didn’t give the original poet credit for the Let Them title) I wanted to have a GNO, Jenny and lately, in a world that feels digitally saturated & personally disconnected. I’ve been craving actual connection.
During the 2+ hours at the Met in Philadelphia, Mel took us on a ride.
NOTE: I tried to hire her to speak at a top advisor summit back in 2019 when I was at Merrill. $100K for a 45-minute virtual talk. At the time that felt insane. Now, I realize that was the discount version.
Two years ago Jon gifted me Bono’s one man show in NYC as a birthday gift. I had a clue as to what Mel might do. She created mini stories, vignettes of her life, meaningful conversation milestones, a living room, dining room, bedroom set of props. The show was a lived experience and you could tell.
She walked through the moments getting us all to a room in Philly (which is her podcast’s #9 listening market in the world)
The Part Everyone Wants to Complicate
Mel’s highlight reel: $800,000 in debt. Stuck. Not getting out of bed. Blame & shame at her husband for being a teacher then failing at his pizza shop in 2008.
And the small, simple thing that shifted everything after watching a rocket literally launch on tv- she she started counting backwards.
(if you haven’t read The 5 Second Rule, it’s worth it. It’s quick.)
And the Mel Robbins shift? It’s not a fancy it’s really small steps & grit.
She took many many action steps, consistently. Before she felt ready Mel got multiple jobs at $25 an hour to get out of debt and eventually doing a road show that had her away for over 50% of the year.
Convention center wine. I’m way too old to be drinking whatever franzia we tasted. Friends, Growth looks like many things.;)
After a few days of reflection, the truth feels LAME but worth sharing. Mel isn’t creating new ideas (the let them poem was written, 54321 is a rocket launch NASA thing, she wasn’t the first podcaster or author). Mel isn’t a rock scientist. She is however, gritting, very charismatic, plays to her strengths & has become very polished.
As my friend and colleague said “she’s like a very smart well read big sister in your corner.”
The difference between her and most of us who are still stuck? She moves. You think. That’s accessible to all of us right now
In the show, Mel posted a huge chart [months down the left & years on the X access across the top of the chart] She only became Mick Jagger level influencer in the last 3 years, at 54. She’s now 57.
She worked for over 30 years doing a lot of things that didn’t look like “success” yet. Most women I work with don’t want that level of success.
In those years she missed a lot of things, too. Grinding. Her daughter Sawyer was part of this tourn. She mentioned how much upset Mel’s Travel caused being absent.
You don’t need another podcast. You don’t need another framework.
You don’t need to “get clear” for the 47th time, you just need a bit of movement.
Now.
If you’re still here, don’t overthink it. Just pick one:
→ Hit reply and tell me the thing you’ve been avoiding taking action on. I’ll read every one.
→ Forward this to the friend who talks about what she wants but hasn’t started or keeps starting & stopping
→ Take 5 seconds (you know where I’m going with this) & do the smallest possible thing for YOUR goals. It might be a Family goal but do the thing to help with your win.
→ Or work with me I’m only focus 1.1 with women who are ready to move from thinking to doing.
A version of Mel Robbins is available to all of us, but it’s not easy.
Will you keep going when it’s boring, invisible, and uncomfortable?
Thank you for being here. Did you see Mel anywhere in the US? I’d Love to hear your experience! reply here or email me [email protected]
