What To Wear With Brown Pants-3 Wonderful Options
Our Thrifty 6 group had a prompt of Bronzed and Brown, so I took it a step further to discuss what to wear with brown pants.
In my way of thinking, anything and everything will go with brown, but I know people like to see examples. So my crew came up with 3 different concept options.
Quote of the day: “Any knowledge that doesn’t lead to new questions quickly dies out: it fails to maintain the temperature required for sustaining life.” Wislawa Symborska
What are concept options?
I consider these a category so that you can easily go into your closet to create and use what you already have instead of needing to buy something new.
ALONG with the fact that just because we are talking about what to wear with brown pants, this could easily be applied to a brown sweater, skirt, or anything brown.
For example, for the idea of what to wear with brown pants, we broke it down into
-Neutrals
-Bright colors
-Prints
But of course, there are other options like pastels or other ways that you describe colors.
Insider tip: Don’t be limited by what is shown here, just go into your closet and hold up any brown clothing item to everything you already own. You might be surprised at how great it looks with colors you never thought to pair it with.
I have talked about the color brown in the past if you want more ideas.

Charlotte: Brown Pants and Neutrals
My mom opted to pair her brown pants (which could be referred to as culottes but we aren’t being picky with our terms) with neutrals.
Sometimes culottes can be as controversial as capri pants but just look at this pair my mom made. I bet most people would think she’s wearing a skirt because of the flow and silhouette.
For the warmer weather, white or ivory is always a great idea. She pulled out this lace blazer she had worn many times before.
Insider tip: One way to make neutrals more interesting is to combine textures. My mom is not only wearing the lace blazer but a ruffle tank under it as well as her mesh scarf that she is using as a belt.
I also love how she added in different prints (all of them neutral except the shoes but it’s fun to pop an outfit with footwear) with her purse, earrings, and glasses.
Lesley: Bright Colors as What to Wear with Brown Pants
Since brown is a subdued color, pairing it with a bright color creates a wonderful contrast. Lesley even commented that she liked the bright pink and brown because the brown seemed more masculine while the pink had a feminine vibe.
Let me point out that Lesley DIYed these cropped pants from a pair of full-length trousers years ago and has showcased them with turquoise.
I always love how Lesley is willing to try different ways of styling items like tucking in her tops. She claims she has a zucchini-shaped body, yet she can rock a tuck as well as other body shapes.
Insider tip: One secret if you feel like tucking a top shows too much tummy is to wear a button blouse opened (or jacket) which will give more coverage.
But beware, just as I share in many of my emails with a plus-size woman who shows comparison videos, sometimes covering up is not hiding things like you think it is.
We need to change our thought process to lumps and bumps aren’t necessarily bad.
Jodie: Wearing Brown Pants with Print
Confession time. I loved the idea of this outfit and pairing this print top with my rust-brown pants. Even when I put this together in front of my mirror, I didn’t like the proportions.
I thought about trying to somehow tuck the top, but the way the print is, I couldn’t figure out a good way.
So I decided to ignore the proportions and just have fun with the outfit. It’s not my favorite outfit of all time, but hey, you can’t win them all.
These brown pants might be better classified as rust, but then again rust is a reddish brown, right?
This print top was a great deal thrifting a couple of years back. It didn’t have a size or label on it, but I just love the trim and design. And I just had to replicate the blue and white in the print with the blue and white stripes of these ages-old shoes and the recently thrifted backpack.
BTW, the hat is my husband’s, and I wore my faux hair bun down low.

Insider tip: If there aren’t many wonderful secondhand shops near you, then I included a list of online shops that I love at the end of this post.

“I went back into the big box of beautiful that Daenel sent to me for this preloved bronze and copper colored Kantha Bae silk tunic. I added an old thrifted LuLaRoe (remember them?!) lace duster vest in tan and my thrifted two-tone brown and tan cowgirl boots. I made my tan tassel earrings from broken bracelets and earring hooks. Dark brown leggings, a rusty colored hat, and a funky rag necklace complete my very Bronzed and Browned outfit.”

“There is a lovely story about this dress, which is one of the archives as I just got back from holiday and didn’t have time to shoot new photos. The photo doesn’t do justice to the glorious colours of this one. Gold, caramel, cognac, all bronzed and browned hughes on a beautiful shiny fabric, not polyester! I was so so very much in love with this dress. I felt like a princess in it! When I bought it the second time the magic was gone……”
Emma of Style Splash
“I love retro brown and orange floral prints so this vintage dress is one of my favourite thrifted finds. I bought it on eBay a couple of years ago, and have added a belt that I bought in a charity shop. The dress has a button missing on one cuff which the previous owner replaced with a brooch. I think this is a charming touch and adds to its uniqueness!”
Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade
“September’s T6 theme is ‘Bronzed & Browned’ – perfect for this original 1970’s dress with all the tones of Autumn. Sadly it’s been devoured by moths leaving it covered in holes, some small, some not so small. It was heading for the trash with its previous owner so I stepped in to save it and restore its former glory!
It was super, super long so, out of necessity, I removed four inches from the hem. Once cut away, I used the fabric to pattern match and patch the holes. Placing it inside the dress, under the damaged areas, I was able to invisibly mend all the holes from the top. I was meticulous, even using different coloured thread to conceal my tiny stitches…
…so now I challenge everyone to spot any evidence of the tragic moth damage!” Bravo Jane
Sally of Within a World of My Own
“While my skin tone retains its usual pink and white instead of the rich tan from an August spent on Spanish beaches, I can still sport the Bronzed and Browned vibe in my outfit colors! This thrifted Target skirt with warm shades of orange and brown is perfect for late summer through late fall, and I styled it with a simple brown T-shirt, a thrifted ivory lace jacket, brown flats, and DIY jewelry in brown, rust, bronze, and mixed metals.”
