Mimic Monday: How To Style A Skirt Overlay
I must have a thing with sheer items lately, as my last Mimic Monday article was inspired by a sheer top. Today’s idea regarding how to style a skirt overlay is also showcasing a sheer item. This time it’s a sheer polka dot skirt.
Quote of the day: “Comparison is the death of joy, and the only person you need to be better than is the one you were yesterday.” Rachel Hollis
The idea of a sheer clothing item is fun, and a bit sexy. But I know many women struggle with how to style the piece since you really can’t wear it by itself.
The key?
Layering. And that’s why I wanted to show 3 ideas of how to style a skirt overlay.
I believe we can layer the bottom half of an outfit just as easily as our top half. Need more convincing? Here are some articles that will help.
Lutz Huelle’s Concept For How to Style a Skirt Overlay
In the original Pin above, a sheer, black and white polka dot skirt was layered over a mini white shirtdress.
Remember, when your interest is peaked in an outfit as you’re perusing Pinterest, you want to analyze what you like about the look.
That doesn’t mean you have to run out and buy the exact same pieces.
You undoubtedly have similar items in your closet, even if the piece is just the concept.
That’s why my 3 examples of how to style a skirt overlay look nothing like this pin. Yet the vibes are there.
I didn’t even copy the cool necklace concept from the original pin, but it would be a fun challenge.

1-Sheer Overlay over Shirt Dress
I wore the same pieces of clothing as the original pin although they are different.
My shirtdress is pink and knee length.
The polka dot sheer skirt is pink, rust, and lilac.
Instead of wearing heels with my outfit, I wore my white sneakers to make the outfit more casual.
You’ve seen this polka dot sheer skirt worn over a grey pleated skirt as part of my birthday celebration in the past.

2- Tulle Overlay Over a Dress
To create this outfit, I worked with the same colorway as the original Pin but my sheer skirt is a mini version.
You’ve seen me wear this mini tulle skirt over a blue dress with a belt over the waistband and then even as a top with a scarf over the waistband.
The black print dress is normally knee length, but for the look on the left, I pulled it up around the waist to change the proportions.
Do you like it one way over the other?
3-What to Wear under a Sheer Dress
For this example, I wore my sheer tulle dress and layered it over a white knit dress. Even though my sheer piece is not polka-dotted, I was still using the idea of how to style a skirt overlay.
I wished I had tried wearing a belt over the waist area, to see how that would look. Then it might have seemed more like a skirt than a dress.
