Spring is in the air, and with it comes the urge to refresh, reorganize, and deep clean our homes–or so says our Where Bloggers Live group.
As a fashionista, much of my time is spent in the laundry room, and if you want to keep your clothes at their best, then spring cleaning for laundry is just as important.
Quote of the day: “When you drink water from a cup, it becomes part of you. When water falls on you like rain, it evaporates a few minutes later…You’ll always feel the rain, but you don’t have to drink the rain.” James Clear
Laundry is a never-ending cycle for all of us, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a cluttered, chaotic, or even chemically harsh experience.
Just as I love to look at our clothes with a fresh perspective, let’s try the same approach to spring cleaning laundry style. I’ll talk about more natural detergents, organizing our laundry area for maximum efficiency, and giving our washer and dryer a well-deserved deep clean.
Trust me, your clothes, your home, and even your skin will thank you!
This isn’t my first foray into talking about laundry. If you are looking for a great steamer, storage tips, or a recipe for laundry detergent, you should check out my previous article.
One of the best ways to start your spring cleaning in the laundry room is by evaluating what you’re using to wash your clothes. Conventional laundry detergents often contain synthetic fragrances, dyes, and harsh chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin and pollute our environment.
Pro tip: Laundry sheets are a game-changer compared to traditional bottled detergent. They’re mess-free, lightweight, and dissolve completely.
Plus, they take up way less space in your laundry room and are far better for the environment—no bulky plastic bottles to recycle or toss.
Great Natural Laundry Detergents to Try
There are so many fabulous options on the market that clean just as effectively as traditional detergents. Remember, you want to steer clear of ones with dyes.
Here are just 2 of the many laundry sheet options.
Pro tip: I used to DIY my own detergent. It is a mixture of washing soda, baking soda, grated castile soap, and a few drops of essential oil (like lavender or tea tree) that is very economical and lasts for ages.
A well-organized laundry space can make a world of difference in your daily routine. Here’s how to get it in tip-top shape.
Smart Storage Solutions
Pro tip: This laundry guard has been the best thing since sliced bread for me. No more clothing falling off the edges behind the appliances.
Decorate It
Since laundry is something we all have to do, why not make the space more enjoyable? I always love seeing how people decorate their laundry rooms and make them feel cozy or fun.
I searched on Pinterest for laundry room ideas and this one reminds me of my grandma while this one is more modern.
Pro tip: Paint or wallpapering the walls makes a huge difference in a small space. Don’t worry it could make it look smaller…who cares? The best reminder is that you can recreate the space whenever you want.
Another great idea is to hang decor in the space. If you have a collection of something (think mismatched plates or wooden spoons), these would be fabulous on the wall.
Otherwise, you can find a plethora of laundry room photos from vintage inspired to puppy ones.
We rely on our washer and dryer to keep our clothes fresh, but when was the last time we gave them some TLC? Regular maintenance ensures they work efficiently and keeps them free of mildew, lint buildup, and detergent residue.
Deep Cleaning Your Washing Machine
Front-loading and top-loading washers can accumulate soap scum, bacteria, and mildew, so they need regular cleaning. Here’s a simple method:
Pro tip: Keep washing machine doors ajar until the inside is dry. If your front loader machine door is in the way, there is a prop to keep it just enough open but not in the way of traffic.
Cleaning Out the Dryer
A clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard, so regular maintenance is crucial!
Bonus Tips for a Fresher/More Natural Laundry Routine
Spring cleaning isn’t just about scrubbing floors and dusting shelves—it’s about revitalizing our everyday spaces and routines. Your laundry room may not be the hub of your house, but I bet you’re in that room more than you realize. So it’s good to include ideas that will behoove us.
Once you incorporate these spring cleaning laundry ideas, it will make laundry feel less like a chore and more like an act of self-care.
As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.
What is Where Bloggers Live? It’s kind of like HGTV’s “Celebrities at Home,” but…Bloggers! Who doesn’t like to peek behind the scenes and hear all about the personal backstories and interesting details? The best part of this group is that I learn something new from everyone’s different perspectives.
FYI, we don’t all post at the same time since we all have different schedules and live in different parts of the country.
