How To Layer With Puff Sleeve Clothing
I had a request from Tresi about the idea of how to layer with puff sleeve clothing. Sometimes we put away “summery” clothing when the temperatures aren’t perfect, yet in all reality, we can find other ways to wear them.
Quote of the day: “Life does not have a pause button and neither should your wardrobe.” The Elegant Stylist on Instagram
Any kind of top or dress that has statement sleeves or some kind of detail on those extremities can be challenging to layer.
You certainly don’t want to cover up the special detail on the sleeves, or sometimes it’s hard to layer over them because they are big or voluminous.
That’s why I wanted to share 4 ideas of how to layer with puff sleeves and I chose this pink dress for my examples.
Getting creative this way is something I specialize in and you can find more ideas in previous articles.

1-How to Layer with Puff Sleeves and a Vest
My first idea on how to layer with puff sleeves is to choose a layer that is sleeveless.
And to me, that means pulling out those vests.
There are so many different types of vests and because of that, I believe there is always one form or type that is in style for the season.
Right now we are seeing a resurgence of menswear vests. Using this type of vest will give your puff sleeves a change of dynamics.
Puff sleeves tend to be thought of as feminine and girly. Yet the menswear vests are considered masculine.
In style terminology, we call that dichotomy or style yin and yang.
It’s contemporary, it’s fun and it’s a great way to pair your clothing.
We don’t need to look young, but it behooves us to look modern.
Insider tip: You don’t need to button all the buttons on your vest. Experiment with them and see what looks best. The best option may be to leave it open.
2-Kimono Layering
While I don’t have any sleeveless kimonos, that didn’t stop me from creating one.
Since most kimonos are very flowy and made of lightweight material, pulling the sleeves up and making them look sleeveless was an easy task.
Insider tip: I used these cardigan pins (one on each side) to pull up the sleeves. Even though this is a pin, I made a video on how you can use it without putting a hole in the material.
Other ideas to make your kimono sleeveless would be to use:
-Magnets
-Brooches
-Barettes
-Tie clips
-Knot them with elastics
-Heck, you could use a twist-tie
3-Wear Any Sleeveless Top
Another great idea of how to layer with puff sleeves is to go through your selection of sleeveless tops including strapless ones or any that you could make sleeveless (remember my trick with the kimono).
For this example, I chose a cropped, spaghetti strap chambray top to layer over this puff sleeve dress, and I love how it turned out.
Piper loved it too.
Make sure to experiment with different lengths of sleeveless tops. And if one is too long? Then put on a belt, and tuck the top under the bottom edge so that the belt is hidden, and the top is shortened.
I showcased this method in a video if you need a visual.
4-Layer Under Your Puff Sleeve Clothing
One of my mottos when it comes to layering is “Over and Under.” Remembering both of these words can create many more outfit ideas than only layer the one way you are used to layering.
Since the whole objective for how to layer with puff sleeves clothing is to show off the special sleeves, you don’t want to distract from them as much as possible.
That’s why for my outfit, I chose a cropped, long-sleeve cardigan to layer under the puff-sleeve dress that was the same color.
Not the same shade of pink, but nonetheless, I think the cardigan wasn’t the focal point.
Another idea would be to match the underlayer to your skin tone as much as possible.
But don’t stop there. Maybe a fabulous contrasting color would take it up a notch.
You won’t know unless you try it, so start trying on clothes.
Insider tip: It’s so beneficial to go and “play” in your closet. It’s much better for our brains than to veg out on the couch watching tv.
Layering
So how would you layer with puff sleeves?
Your first response might be you don’t want to have to layer with your puff-sleeve clothing. And I get that.
But finding different ways to wear the things we already have in our closets is not only creating new pathways in your brain but also saving you Money.
I like to think of it as I’m teaching you to fish instead of just handing you a fish to eat. Now you have the foundation to use these ideas with all kinds of outfits.
