We don’t always trust what we see anymore. We sometimes don’t believe our own eyes or our own ears.
That gut-punching observation from Merriam-Webster’s editor, Peter Sokolowski, perfectly nails the raw Anxiety surrounding authenticity, their 2023 Word of the Year. We’re drowning in deepfakes, AI-generated content, and perfectly sculpted online lives. How in are we supposed to tell what’s real?
The very definition of authentic—”not false or imitation” and “true to one’s own personality, spirit, or character”—should be our guiding star in this bewildering fog. But even authenticity feels like a mere performance now, doesn’t it? We’re left screaming: how can we possibly be truly authentic when the lines between heartfelt expression and calculated presentation are so infuriatingly blurred?
This isn’t just some abstract philosophical musing; this “crisis of authenticity” is tearing at the very fabric of our trust in everything—institutions, media, even each other. When we can’t be sure if a student wrote their own paper, or if a politician’s words are truly their own, the foundations of our shared reality don’t just crack—they shatter.
But this is not a lost cause. Averting this crisis begins with every single one of us. We have to ignite that fire of discernment within ourselves, fiercely scrutinizing information, questioning every source, and ravenously seeking out diverse perspectives.
More importantly, we must commit, with every fiber of our being, to embodying authenticity in our own lives—to standing tall in our values, to speaking our truth with unwavering integrity, and to passionately embracing every messy, beautiful imperfection that makes us real. This fiery individual commitment to authenticity is the only way humanity fights back and ultimately triumphs over this existential threat.
