Moonlighting
With the onset of remote and hybrid work, the practice of moonlighting has come into focus again. Moonlighting is when employees have a second job in addition to a regular job.
Hybrid workers are using time saved from the commute to work and idle time left over from finished assignment to work a second or third job. According to a October 2021 survey conducted by Resume Builder, 7 in 10 remote workers have multiple jobs. And, three fourths of workers with multiple jobs are also running a side business.
One remote worker reported having five jobs and using his little sister to help him maintain at least two of them. Workers have found a way to double and even triple their incomes on the sly through moonlighting. They are doing it too because of boredom, worries about layoffs, to payoff debt, have more spending Money or they are tired of working hard for a meager raise every year.
Undoubtedly, the problem for employers with remote and hybrid workers moonlighting is that many of these white collar workers are doing it secretly. And, a article in the Wall Street Journal surmised that the workers are not fully engaged with either job! Employees are not letting their employers know that they are working for another company. Which job takes priority on the calendar for meetings, project deadlines, and other employer demands are a juggling act.
However, workers are doing it successfully.

Moonlighting in the age of hybrid work could be seen as taking advantage of the system, but workers believe that they are just doing to the company what has been done to them. Workers exchange their time for money and companies have historically gotten more out of them than they were worth. Remote and hybrid work is sort of leveling the playing field. Many white collar workers are now able to better control how much of their time is spent focused on their employer.
The practice of moonlighting is not illegal, however it could get you fired from one or both companies if your HR department find out about it.
