Breast Reconstruction or Not After 50: A Conversation with Simone Kreutzer
In the world of Fabulous after Fifty, we embrace the journey of Aging with grace, strength, and a whole lot of curiosity. Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Simone Kreutzer, a remarkable woman who embodies all these qualities and more. Our conversation delved into a deeply personal and often overlooked topic: breast reconstruction—or the choice not to—after a mastectomy at 50 and beyond.
A Journey of Courage and Resilience
Simone Kreutzer is a woman of incredible strength and resilience. Born in the south of the Netherlands, she has traveled the world with her Family, working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her journey has taken her from the US to Afghanistan, Palestine, Brussels, and back to the Netherlands. But it’s her personal journey with breast Cancer that has truly shaped her perspective on life, Health, and the power of choice.
Facing Breast Cancer Twice
Simone was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 while living in Brussels. Thanks to a persevering doctor, a mammography revealed cancer, leading to surgery and radiation Therapy. She recovered quickly and felt active and fine. However, within five years, she was diagnosed again. This time, her decision was clear: she wanted a mastectomy.
“I was very much convinced—I want those boobs gone,” Simone shared with a mix of determination and humor. Her pragmatic approach to cancer is inspiring. She chose a mastectomy without reconstruction, a decision supported by her husband and driven by her desire to recover quickly and move on with her life.
The Power of Choice
Simone’s journey highlights the importance of personal choice in healthcare decisions. She explored various options but ultimately decided against reconstruction due to the complexity and potential risks. Her story underscores the need for women to have the space and support to make informed decisions that align with their values and priorities.
Embracing a New Body Image
One of the most poignant moments in our conversation was when Simone reflected on what breasts mean to us as women. She shared her journey of accepting her body post-mastectomy, emphasizing that our worth is not defined by our physical appearance. Simone’s decision to embrace a flat chest is a testament to her strength and self-acceptance.
Navigating Alternative Healing
Simone also shared her decision to explore Alternative Medicine and healing practices. After her mastectomy, she chose not to undergo further invasive treatments, opting instead for a holistic approach that prioritized her quality of life. This decision was not easy, but it was made with the support of her family and a deep understanding of her own needs.
A Message of Hope and Empowerment
Simone’s story is a powerful reminder that we have choices in how we approach our health and well-being. Her courage in sharing her journey openly is a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges. She encourages women to take the time to explore different options, seek support, and make decisions that align with their values and priorities.
