Eight Signs It’s Time to Reboot Your Career in Midlife

It’s not uncommon to wake up one day feeling like it’s time to make a change in your career. Or, maybe you’ve been feeling this way for a while. Job hopping is not uncommon at any age. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that workers age 18 to 54 hold an average of 11.7 jobs.

Maybe You’ve Experienced These Thoughts

👉 I used to enjoy my work, but lately, I’ve felt unmotivated and disengaged. Is it just a phase or a deeper issue?
👉 I’m constantly stressed and exhausted, but I can’t pinpoint if it’s primarily due to the work I’m doing or if there are other factors contributing to this slump.
👉 I’ve been questioning my career choice and wondering if I’m on the right path. Could this uncertainty be affecting other areas of my life as well?

These thoughts or questions might run through your mind when something feels off about your career. And you may not know the answers right away, but that’s okay.

What matters is taking the time to recognize and identify what’s causing you to feel this way. That’s the first step to getting back on track.

To help you with this process, I have compiled a list of 8 telltale signs that your career is making you feel this way. Let’s get right into it!

1 – You Lack Fulfillment In Your Current Role

Suppose you feel unfulfilled or dissatisfied with your current job, despite trying different avenues for improvement. In that case, it may indicate that your career no longer aligns with your current values, interests, or long-term goals.

2 – You Struggle With Persistent Boredom or Disengagement At Work

When you find yourself consistently disinterested or bored with your work, unable to find motivation or excitement, it could indicate that you need a change. Feeling unchallenged or stagnant can hinder your professional Growth and negatively impact your Mental Health.

3 – You Struggle With Burnout or Chronic Stress

If your job is causing excessive Stress, leading to Burnout, or affecting your physical and mental well-being, it’s crucial to recognize the toll it takes on your overall quality of life. Persistent stress can be an indication that it’s time for a change. It my be time for a career reboot.

4 – There Is A Legitimate Lack Of Growth Opportunities

If your current job lacks opportunities for growth, advancement, or skill development, you may feel stuck in your career trajectory. It’s essential to continually seek new challenges and opportunities to keep your skills sharp and advance professionally.

5 – Incompatible Values With Your Leader, Colleagues, or Company

If your current values and the company culture or work environment clash significantly, it can lead to a sense of dissonance and dissatisfaction. Reassessing your career path may be necessary to find a better match for your personal and professional values.

6 – Financial Constraints

While it’s not the sole determining factor, financial considerations can play a role in deciding to reboot your career. If you’re consistently struggling financially or feel limited in your earnings potential, exploring new career options might provide better financial stability and growth opportunities.

7 – Personal Growth and Change In Interests

As individuals evolve, our interests and passions can change over time. Maybe you’ve developed new hobbies, interests, or a strong desire to pursue a different field. If you’re experiencing this, don’t deny it. This could indicate that your current career no longer aligns with your personal growth path.

8 – Lack of Work-Life Balance

Finally, if your current job demands excessive time and energy, leaving little room for personal life, family, or self-care, it can lead to dissatisfaction and burnout. Rebooting your career might allow you to find a better work-life balance that suits your needs.
