Is it Dementia or Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)?
August 11th, 2022

Did you know that some people diagnosed with dementia may not have dementia at all? Surprisingly, it’s estimated that 5 percent of people institutionalized for dementia actually have Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). NPH is caused when the normal production of spinal fluid goes awry and builds up in brain ventricles, which cushion and nourish the brain. This throws off brain pressure and causes neurological and physical symptoms, such as: Difficulty walking Cognitive challenges Mild dementia Urinary urgency or incontinence NPH can occur at any age, but it’s primarily seen in people age... Continue Reading

Redefining Ambition and Career Development
May 24th, 2022

Many definitions of “leadership” exist; but the ones that always resonate for me involve an element of bringing people along, helping them grow and progress, and facilitating their development as people and their careers. And I have the feeling that similar definitions are deeply held by many leaders – especially given the frequency of one question I’m asked over and over: “What should I do with my ‘I’m good where I am’ employee who lacks ambition, doesn’t seem to want to grow, and is completely disinterested in moving up, over, or anywhere?” My answer to these leaders –... Continue Reading

BRAIN FITNESS
February 25th, 2022

You know that your body needs exercise, but did you know it’s CRUCIAL for your brain as well? I recently interviewed Ron Nevelow, with Enlighten Senior Care on my podcast, and he shared the 5 things we all should be doing to work toward (and keep) a healthier brain. Exercise – 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, enough to keep your heart at an elevated rate. Walking is the #1 way to do this, especially for older adults, followed by swimming. Social Interaction – when you interact with people socially you use different parts of your brain. Note having a conversation with a new person will challenge... Continue Reading

Spreading Christmas Joy
December 8th, 2021

I love Christmas! The lights, decorations, parties…but my favorite part is the opportunity to help others, especially seniors who are in need, and to bring a bit of joy into their lives. Last week we worked with Meals on Wheels of Denton County to help raise donations for their Senior Paws program… or “Santa Paws” as we called it. Seniors receiving Meals on Wheels are typically on limited incomes, and many have furry companions – dogs or cats. There is a need for dog/cat food, treats, toys, dog beds, etc. so we decided to host two fundraisers last week. People were... Continue Reading

The BEST GIFT Aging Parents Can Give Their Children
November 21st, 2021

Conversations about aging and transitioning into senior living communities aren’t easy for anyone. However, it is imperative that you have these conversations, not just with your spouse, but with your children. The BEST GIFT you can give your family is knowledge of your wishes should you need to transition to an assisted living or memory care community. I’ve spoken with 1,000’s of families over the years that I have worked in senior living, and way too many have no clue about their parents finances or wishes. Unfortunately, most people work from a state of being reactive instead of proactive.... Continue Reading
