1. Epilepsy- Stopping Seizures… or Maybe Preventing Them Entirely! Jeff Ostroff 35:40

Hi everybody!

Did you know that an estimated 50 million people around the world have epilepsy? Did you know that there are some very exciting advances being made, not only to help diagnose and treat epilepsy, but potentially to prevent it? I hope you enjoy learning what my guest expert, Laura Lubbers of Cure Epilepsy has to say about that– and much more– on this episode of Health Care on the Horizon.

Among other things, Laura speaks about (1) when epilepsy was first reported, and what the common symptoms and effects of this condition are, (2) where in the world you’re more likely to find people with epilepsy and why, and (3) new approaches now being used to diagnose the different kinds of epilepsy.

On a very positive note, you’ll learn about some of the exciting advances taking place that are designed to improve the quality of life for those who have epilepsy. Beyond that, there’s also other hopeful news: Listen as Laura discusses efforts being taken to potentially prevent young children (and maybe others) from experiencing epileptic seizures!

Now a little more about Laura: Dr. Laura Lubbers brings more than 25 years of research experience to her position of Chief Scientific Officer at CURE Epilepsy. In her role, she is responsible for developing the organization’s research strategy, and overseeing and implementing all research programs which seek to cure epilepsy, not just treat the symptoms. Dr. Lubbers also contributes to educational activities to increase awareness of epilepsy.

Prior to joining CURE Epilepsy, she spent 15 years in a large pharmaceutical company as a drug discovery scientist. Importantly, Dr. Lubbers’ sister suffered from intractable epilepsy from an early age and her mother was diagnosed later in life.  The impact of epilepsy on her family has fueled her passion to find better healthcare solutions for people with epilepsy.

Laura holds a Bachelor of Science in Physiology, as well as a Masters and a PhD from The University of Illinois, Urbana. You can find out more about her, CURE Epilepsy, the “Seizing Life” podcast, donating, volunteering, etc. at https://www.cureepilepsy.org/
