Leucine and Longevity| Muscle, Metabolism, and the Double-Edged Sword of Aging Well | Ep. 424

  1. Leucine and Longevity| Muscle, Metabolism, and the Double-Edged Sword of Aging Well | Ep. 424 Jeff Armstrong 45:09

Leucine is often celebrated as one of the most important nutrients for healthy aging. As a key amino acid involved in muscle protein synthesis, leucine helps preserve strength, mobility, and independence — all critical factors for aging well.

But emerging longevity research suggests the story may be more complicated.

In this episode of The Aging Well Podcast, Dr. Jeff Armstrong and cohost Corbin Bruton explore the “double-edged sword” of leucine. While leucine supports muscle maintenance and mitochondrial energy production, it also strongly activates the mTOR pathway — a biological Growth signal associated with accelerated aging and reduced lifespan in some animal studies when chronically overstimulated.

So how do we reconcile these competing ideas? Is leucine helping us age better, or merely helping us age stronger? And is there a difference?

Together, they unpack the complex relationship between muscle, metabolism, longevity science, mitochondrial function, Exercise, and nutritional balance — exploring what it means to pursue not just longer life, but wiser aging.
