The Spinners: Motown Beginnings, Philly Soul Success & Jessie Peck’s Journey

The Spinners are one of the most iconic soul groups in music history, blending rich harmonies, infectious melodies, and captivating dance moves. Their story is a testament to perseverance, talent, and an unwavering commitment to delivering unforgettable performances. From their early days at Motown in Detroit to their golden era with Atlantic Records, The Spinners have carved out a Legacy that continues to thrive. Today, they remain a powerhouse act, and their lineup includes the talented Jessie Peck, whose admiration for the group led him to become an essential part of their enduring success.

The Spinners formed in 1954 in Ferndale, Michigan, originally calling themselves The Domingoes. The founding members—Henry Fambrough, Bobbie Smith, Pervis Jackson, Billy Henderson, and C.P. Spencer—were influenced by Detroit’s vibrant music scene and Motown’s signature sound.

After rebranding as The Spinners, they signed with Motown in 1963, hoping to achieve the same success as labelmates like The Temptations and The Four Tops. While they recorded several singles, including That’s What Girls Are Made For, widespread success remained elusive. Despite their talent, they struggled to gain Motown’s full promotional support.

Everything changed in 1972 when The Spinners left Motown for Atlantic Records. Under the guidance of renowned producer Thom Bell, they adopted the lush, sophisticated Philadelphia soul sound that catapulted them to fame. Hits like I’ll Be Around, Could It Be I’m Falling in Love, One of a Kind (Love Affair), and The Rubberband Man dominated the charts. Their smooth harmonies, impeccable vocal delivery, and polished choreography made them a standout act of the 1970s.

The Spinners became synonymous with timeless soul music, appealing to multiple generations of fans. Their ability to blend heartfelt lyrics with captivating melodies solidified them as one of the greatest R&B groups of all time.

Like many legendary bands, The Spinners faced challenges, including the departure of key members. However, their dedication to their craft never wavered. They continued to tour, record, and uphold the legacy that had made them famous.

Despite lineup changes, their commitment to excellence ensured they remained a must-see live act. Their ability to seamlessly integrate new talent allowed them to keep their signature sound alive while embracing fresh influences.

Enter Jessie Peck – A Dream Fulfilled

One of the most exciting additions to The Spinners in recent years is Jessie Peck. Born in Queens, New York, Jessie grew up with a deep love for classic R&B and soul music. He admired groups like The Spinners and dreamed of one day joining the ranks of music legends.

Before joining the group, Jessie had a diverse career in music, modeling, and voice acting. His deep, resonant bass voice set him apart, making him a natural fit for the group’s signature harmonies. When the opportunity arose in 2009 to join The Spinners, it was a dream come true.

Jessie quickly became a vital member, adding richness to their sound and bringing new energy to their live performances. His stage presence, powerful vocals, and dedication to preserving The Spinners’ legacy have been instrumental in keeping their music alive for new audiences.

The Spinners Today – Still Spinning Strong

Decades after their first hit, The Spinners remain one of the few groups that seamlessly combine soulful harmonies with dynamic choreography. Their live performances are a testament to their showmanship, engaging audiences with a mix of classic hits and electrifying stage presence.

Their music continues to resonate across generations, with songs frequently sampled, covered, and featured in films, TV shows, and commercials. They are proof that true talent stands the test of time.

The Spinners’ influence on soul, R&B, and pop music is undeniable. With Jessie Peck now part of the group, their legacy remains vibrant. His journey from an admirer to an essential member underscores the lasting impact of their music.

Hello, I’m Sandy Kaye. A freelance broadcaster, journalist and producer who has spent more than 35 years on both sides of radio and television microphones. I’ve worked with every TV network in Australia, have produced and presented for countless radio stations around the country and have hosted my own commercial radio talk-back show. I’ve even held the distinction of being Sydney’s first female newsreader on radio – way back when!

Today my passion is A Breath of Fresh Air which allows me to immerse myself in one of my favourite things – music. I just love all kinds of music and am fascinated by the people who make it. In particular, it’s the music of the '60s '70s and '80s that takes me back to my youth and means so much to me.

As a journalist, I’m all about digging deep into the classic hits of our time.
I bring you intimate, warm, fireside chats with the artists who tell us about their lives both then and now.
We learn about what makes them tick, who they are in their professional and private lives and how they went about making the soundtrack to our lives.

'A Breath of Fresh Air’ is exceptional - exceptional not because of me, but rather because of the stories that some of the best-known musical artists choose to share with me.

I created this podcast to honour them. It’s all about THEIR lives, THEIR stories, THEIR music, told now, in THEIR voices, before they’re lost forever.

I see my podcast as a personal labour of love, but also as an archival legacy for music fans and practitioners alike, both current and future, who otherwise might never know of the amazing people who helped build the industry.

I really hope you enjoy each and every episode of A Breath of Fresh Air.
