What To Wear in 100-Degree Weather: Secrets Delivered

For our Thrifty Six group of women, I chose the theme, “Hot to Trot” knowing that August is in the dog days of summer. What that means is that the three of us are spilling the secrets of what to wear in 100-degree weather. But you should see how the other women interpreted the prompt, LOL.

Quote of the day: “We want solutions, but what we really need are attitudes…You don’t need an easier life, but rather an attitude of perseverance. Attitude precedes outcome.” James Clear

While we talk about the weather a lot, I hate to let it be a deciding factor in feeling good or having fun. That’s where attitude comes in. Many women say they can’t imagine the idea of what to wear in 100-degree weather because it seems so hot.

However, humans are incredibly adaptable besides the fact that Arizona’s 100 degrees is very different from other areas due to the lack of humidity.

All three of us have learned firsthand what to wear in 100-degree weather and we each will share our secrets.
The biggest secret? Try out secondhand items if you aren’t sure how something will work. Then you save Money and may find some wonderful treasures.

I’ve written a couple of other articles regarding what to wear in certain temperatures both hot and not so hot.

Charlotte- Lightweight pants

Silk Pants For What To Wear In 100-Degree Weather
Pants: Monkey Wear-thrifted~~ Top: Express-thrifted~~ Shoes: SO-Kohls ~~ Earrings: thrifted~~ Purse: Steve Madden-thrifted

Charlotte has learned that lightweight pants are ideal for covering her legs yet staying cool for what to wear in 100-degree weather. You’ve seen my mom wear these same pants for a fancy occasion with ankle boots.
It’s such a great example of how the same print pants can be paired with dark or bright colors and still look fabulous.

Charlotte’s tips include
1-Make sure the material is lightweight. While most articles will tell you that natural fibers breathe in the heat, some can be too heavy to be comfortable.
2-Even though we appreciate loose and flowy, creating fit (like she did with this scarf clip) doesn’t have to make an outfit hot.
3-Add bright colors with a purse, accessories, or footwear to give off a summer vibe.

Insider info: These scarf clips are fabulous for scarves, t-shirts, and even long skirts or dresses. Just thread the material through and voila.

Lesley: Flowy Skirt as What to Wear in 100-Degree Weather

Woman Over 70 And What To Wear In 100-Degree Weather
Skirt:Intro-thrifted ~~ Top: Old Navy~~ Shoes: Mephisto-thrifted~~ Necklace: JCPenneys~~ Bracelet: Richlyn’c creation (her daughter)~~ Earrings: JCPenneys~~ Purse: no label-thrifted

Lesley gave me this to say about a long hot summer in old lady style, “Yes it has been a hot summer, but I refuse to hole up and not get out. And when I get out, I refuse to be frumpy.
This outfit is stylish, sassy, and cool. Even though the skirt is long, it’s full and breezy so I get air circulated around my legs.

I still wear sleeveless tops and dare anyone to comment on my ‘Hello Dolly’ upper arms. In this heat, I keep my bling at a minimum.
If we were to be outside, I would have also added a red hat.”

With that being said, Lesley’s secrets are
1-Breezy items. You want airflow so when you do sweat, your clothes don’t cling.
2-Get comfortable bearing your arms because our bodies are beautiful. It’s the saddest thing to think that just because our bodies have changed, makes them ugly.
3-Minimal accessories. Heavy necklaces and bracelets can make you overheat. Find lightweight or loose ones, just like for our clothing.

Jodie-Layering Even in the Heat

I am such a fan of wearing a dress as a top. In fact, I’ve written about the myths associated with this trick (including that you can be ANY size). It’s a fabulous option if your dress seems too short or you can’t find the right color top to go with a longer skirt (that was my scenario).

Even for the concept of what to wear in 100-degree weather, layering like this does not automatically make you hotter for 2 reasons.
1-If you are out in the sun, it’s better to be covered instead of allowing the sun hit your skin.
2-Having your legs covered makes it more comfortable to sit down. Especially in the car when the seats are super hot.

Since my mom and Lesley hit a lot of the clothing essentials about what to wear in 100-degree weather, let me add some other secrets.
1-Ice water really does cool you off. Forget those articles about drinking hot liquids in order to sweat. The goal is to cool down!!
2-Go outside on a regular basis. If you only hang out in the air-conditioning, then the outside temperature will obviously feel hotter. Yet if you’re healthy, your body can acclimate; that’s one of its superpowers.
3-There are a couple of fabulous devices to keep you cool. These cooling scarves are something my husband wears often. And my friend, Cathie, swears by this portable fan to wear around your neck.

What To Wear In 100-Degree Weather: Secrets Delivered &Raquo; T6 Hot To Trot

Thrifty 6

With the fashion and textile industry being a major contributor to landfills and other environmental pollution, we decided to make it the mission of this little group to focus on second-hand items. Every month we will choose a theme and share our styles with you to hopefully inspire you to shop more preloved and less fast fashion.

Insider tip: If there aren’t many wonderful secondhand shops near you, then I included a list of online shops that I love at the end of this post.

What would be your interpretation of “Hot to Trot”? You might get a kick from the other members of the Thrifty 6.

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

“I struggled with this hot to trot theme and then after a meditative Yoga session, it all came to me! I focused on red for the hot part and horses and cowgirl boots for the trot part. My red satin slip skirt, red tank top, and brown cowgirl boots were all purchased secondhand and my brown corduroy ruana (which has horses and other Native American motifs embroidered on it) was handmade by me a few weeks ago. The rest of my accessories (belts, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces) are old from my personal collection. The only recently purchased brand new item is my red/burgundy Panama hat which I think emphasized the theme perfectly! Red hot from my head down with trotting boots on my feet!”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style

“When Jodie announced the theme I had to Google it first because I had no idea what she meant. I got from Google: eager to have sex. Well, I was sure Jodie didn’t mean that. Then I understood that it meant that you didn’t feel like doing anything. And then I understood that you actually felt like doing something! So I still don’t get it but I do have an outfit for you.
This dress is years old and I actually only wear it at home. On such a nice long warm summer evening where I still want to look nice instead of sitting all evening in shorts. This dress fits so wonderfully, is sleeveless, stretchy and short enough for a summer evening at home. The dress is from Vinted and also has pockets!
So, hot to trot to do nothing but sit and enjoy a summer evening, or hot to trot because I can’t wait to enjoy a summer evening!”

Emma of Style Splash

“I really wasn’t sure what to make of the theme “Hot to Trot” – my first thought was to pick hot colours or maybe dressing for hot weather. This outfit combines both of those elements. And everyone turns lobster red when they get too hot don’t they? I’m obsessed with this print from Fabienne Chapot. I bought this dress, plus a top and trousers in the same print – all preloved. I already owned another dress in this print too! I’ve added a chunky necklace I bought on eBay, sunglasses from a vintage shop and clutch bag from Zara”.

Hot to trot – that’s the T6 theme this month – it means different things to different people.
For me it’s sexy equestrian; there’s something sooooo alluring about jodhpurs and a riding crop…
..and especially this dressage inspired look.
I feel like a character from a Jilly Cooper novel….
I’ve never read ‘Riders’ but I think they were all pretty ‘hot to trot’!!!

Grace of Graceful Rags

“I chose this navy dress (that I thrifted for $1!) for the Hot to Trot theme because I always reach for dresses or skirts when I want to stay cool. Plus, this one has a plunging neckline that’s a little sexy, perfect for the other meaning of the theme… Wink wink.”
