Unusual Shopping Splurges For Frugal Women

Our Ageless Style group came up with the prompt of shopping splurges. Knowing that we are frugal at heart and routinely shop at thrift stores, this was a challenge. Until we really thought about it and each of us chose a different type of shopping splurge to showcase.

Quote of the day: “If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” Benjamin Franklin

Every woman’s definition of shopping splurges is different. Our perspective on what we consider expensive and splurge-worthy is an emotional decision.

While many stylists will harp that you should spend more on basics because you wear them more often, I often think that clothing is not an intelligent splurge.
We change sizes and can find thrifty options for those basics.

This is coming from a retired person. It was different when I was working. Sure, I still enjoyed a sale, but my perspective was different than now.

Even though we are discussing shopping splurges, all three of us have combined expensive items with thrifted items. I have many more articles on thrifting if you’re interested.

Charlotte-Shopping Splurges with Jewelry

My mom shared her thoughts: “My shopping splurges are on garnets which is my birthstone for January. It all started after I retired from teaching and then worked in alterations at a department store.

Even though I got a discount, I didn’t find many garnets in their fine jewelry department. However, during a lunch break, I walked the mall and found my largest splurge. It was the gold and garnet bracelet.

Other pieces joined this splurge when I cruised the Caribbeans and found a large ring at another store. A trip to Spain found me other pendants and then living in Denver, I amassed a couple more pieces with garnets.”

My mom was wearing her white top untucked at first and I thought it was the perfect experiment to compare it tucked vs untucked.
Her concern was trying to hide her tummy, but I believe the black and white print does a better job than the white shirt. Plus the proportions seem better.

And I love the pop of red in the look with the shoes and purse. It mirrors the dark red of the garnets.

Lesley-Thrifted Shopping Splurge

Lesley considers this embellished purse her most recent shopping splurge. This is her story: “I was out thrifting one day and had found a blouse that I liked. As I was waiting to check out, I noticed the display of purses behind the register.
This amazing purse (I’m a sucker for anything blue) was sitting there.

Considering it was at the thrift store, it was a bit pricey, but I couldn’t resist.

I now have it displayed on my hat wall with a flamboyant hat that has many of the same colors. Seeing this purse every day is like looking at a loving painting. It makes me happy.”

I did find this purse on eBay if you’re interested. Or there are many very similar in different colors.

Lesley’s outfit creates a wonderful backdrop to show off her thrifted shopping splurge.

I’d love to point out the scarf around her waist. It is proof that any shape can copy this idea. Lesley describes her shape as a zucchini.

The scarf is also functional as we were in a lecture where the AC was blowing cold, and Lesley removed it from her waist and used it on her shoulders and arms.

Jodie-Shopping Splurges with Hair

If you are part of my email family, then you might remember when at last year’s Home & Garden show I bought some halo hair extensions. Yes, at the Home & Garden show. Who knew they sold those kinds of things there, right?

I’d been super interested in the halo extensions since they are all in one piece and finding a color that matched so perfectly seemed serendipitous.

Insider detail: If you don’t know what halo extensions are, here is an example. I’ve been meaning to buy a less expensive option to compare, but the color matching is hard.

Want to see a video of how I put them on?

Needless to say, they were definitely a shopping splurge, even after having talked them down on the price.

Have I gotten my Money’s worth? I would say yes because I love to wear them. Because it’s not just about the durability of something but the joy it brings us, right?

Other Shopping Splurges

While I don’t usually spend a lot of money on clothing, I have at times. So I tried to put a couple of them together in an outfit.

1-The skirt. It’s part of a skirt suit with a matching blazer when I thought I wanted a fun color suit. I wish I had bought the pants instead. And shockingly I paid full price even after Retirement.

2-The top is created from a pair of wrap pants. They were purchased at a local farmer’s market and are made by a local woman. I was enthralled by the fact that they could be worn as wrap pants OR a jumpsuit and they were super lightweight. The price was more than I usually spend and I would say I wished I hadn’t bought them.
Only because they aren’t really convenient to wear. Except today as a top. I doubled the material and considered it a scarf to come up with this way of styling it.
You can see it worn as pants on Wednesday of this daily outfit post and then worn as a jumpsuit on Rob’s Birthday in this daily outfit post.

Insider tip: I used Maggie’s magnets to hold the pieces of material together at the shoulder (and then since the flower pin is metal, it magnetized to the magnets so I didn’t have to put holes in the material).
The magnets are also keeping the sides pulled together.

3-Shoes-I believe in splurging on comfortable and stylish shoes. They are the foundation for healthy and happy feet.
The brand is Ros (formerly Walking Cradles) and while I have worked with them in the past and been gifted some of their shoes, these were purchased by me.
I bought these at least 4 years ago and they are still one of my favorite pairs.

What Are Your Shopping Splurges?

Now here’s something unusual. We are all wearing the same length skirts/dresses. A 30-year span showing how legs of any age, color, and size look great.
