Attending an art gallery opening is the perfect excuse to embrace creative fashion, mix unexpected elements, and let your personality shine. Just like the art on display, your outfit can tell a story, spark conversation, and make an impression.
Which is why this evening was the perfect excuse to dress up and talk about what to wear to an art gallery opening.
Quote of the day: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched–they must be felt with the heart.” Helen Keller
But how do you balance artistic expression with clothing outfits?
We put the idea of what to wear to an art gallery opening to the test by styling outfits with drama, texture, and statement details.
Style tip: You can use these ideas for each and every occasion. Going to a wedding? Include some drama into your look. Invited to a party? Make sure to add some statement details. Even when grocery shopping, you’ll feel more confident when you incorporate some intention into your look.
We have shared outfits worn to many cultural events like a Taylor Swift concert, a matinee opera, and a ballet to give you oodles of inspiration.
As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.
Lesley’s look is the epitome of contemporary chic, proving that black and white never have to be boring.
She layered a black draped top with a belted waist over wide-leg printed pants.
The structured fedora adds an element of mystery, while her classic black flats keep things comfortable for an evening of mingling. A small structured handbag completes the look, adding just the right touch of sophistication.
Details:
-Brava for this fabulous look. I remember when Lesley wasn’t a huge fan of print pants. Yet, they really bring a dramatic vibe to the look. This pair is from our favorite local boutique, Just Be Youtiful.
-Fedoras have a cool girl vibe and can be easily found in the men’s section when shopping.
Style Takeaway: If you are addicted to wearing black and white together, adding a third color makes it more modern. The belt and purse add a third “color” to the mix and bring out the lines in the pants. Even though the lines are gold, the cognac purse and belt play to that warm coloring.
Rob’s ensemble is a masterclass in layering, with a mix of bold and classic pieces that create an effortlessly cool vibe.
A plaid blazer layered over a colorfully striped sweater and a pop of yellow underneath brings playful energy to an otherwise tailored look.
Dark denim grounds the outfit, while the bright yellow loafers and printed socks add that signature dose of personality.
Details:
-Adding the white scarf around his neck is a signature style piece he does that I just love. Rob used it with his neutral look recently.
-These yellow shoes have been in his closet for over 15 years and they always get compliments. Probably because you don’t see many men wearing yellow shoes. If you’re going to an art gallery on opening night, you might as well be bold.
-I accidentally shortened his jeans too much, so he’s been a good sport and wearing them cuffed so the shortness looks intentional.
Style Takeaway: Don’t be afraid to mix prints and colors! Art gallery openings are the perfect setting to experiment. If you’re hesitant about bold hues, start by incorporating neutral prints together.
I wanted my outfit to be a piece of art.
I was tickled by the idea of a long-sleeve sequin top when I found it on sale at Target. The front keyhole could be too revealing except I wore a layer under it (or you could wear the top backward).
This skirt is really a maxi that I pulled up to act as a strapless dress–that is what you see under the keyhole.
The oversized glasses add an artsy, playful touch, and the unique accessories, like the clip-on earring at the keyhole, tie everything together beautifully.
Details:
-The orange fringe maxi has had a huge slit since I pulled it up. Therefore, I wore an orange knit skirt under it for modesty. It blends so well that I bet no one noticed it. You might be able to see it better in my FB video.
-My mom made this purse eons ago. Since it’s a piece of art in itself, it worked beautifully for the idea of what to wear to an art gallery opening.
-These eyeglasses are from a very bold, glasses brand called Zeelool. If you’re tired of wearing glasses that have no personality, this site is for you.
Style Takeaway: A gallery opening is the perfect opportunity to embrace textures and unexpected details. Sequins, fringe, and statement accessories can create visual interest, making your outfit as engaging as the artwork around you.
