We love our Retirement community and some of its quirky features. While not all of these details are unique to only our area, many make you realize that the address is in Sun City, AZ.
Quote of the day: “If your ship doesn’t come in, swim out to it!” Jonathan Winters
Once you have lived at an address in Sun City for a couple of years, you forget how unique these items are until a friend comes to visit.
This area has a mid-century modern vibe like Palm Springs, California, and is near and dear to our hearts; So much so that we have promoted it to friends who have moved out here.
That’s when I thought it would be fun to share some of the quirkiness found in our retirement community.
Many of these unique details can be attributed to the founder of Sun City, Del Webb, who was a visionary.
While I’m no expert on the reasoning behind these details, I will give my theories and opinions. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
If you want to learn more about Sun City, AZ, I hope you check out the other articles I’ve written.

I showcased our quirky garbage cans in my original article about Sun City, AZ, when we first moved here. You can read about how the garbage guys pick it up and handle it in that post.
Every driveway has this unique detail as part of our address in Sun City.
We lived here almost 5 years before someone showed us that we could step on the handle to drop garbage in without bending over to lift the lid (thanks Kym). This is especially helpful with our doggy waste.
Insider tip: If you need to carry your doggy waste around for some time, I have found the handle bags to be a huge benefit.
You could ask why you would want your garbage can buried in the ground this way. It is a nice way to keep the smelly things from stinking up your garage.
On top of that, you don’t have to worry about animals ripping open the garbage bags and strewing garbage all over.
When we first moved to our address in Sun City, AZ, I was shocked to see green rock used in landscaping. Not that it was everywhere, but some single-family houses have some form of it.
We learned that Sun City, AZ was one of the first communities in Phoenix to have painted yards like this. Want to read more about the phenomenon that is going away?? Here’s an article from the Tucson Press from 2011.
The photos above are examples of one of the addresses in Sun City that has the rocks painted green and glued down.
But not all green rock landscaping has been painted and glued down. There is a variety of hues of green rocks we see along our daily walks as shown below.
Obviously, this is one way to have green landscaping without the cost of watering a lawn. The lighter green rock isn’t as “in your face” as the painted green rock, but it’s still quite quirky.
Insider detail: Yes, we also see small patches of artificial grass in our community. But did you know that artificial turf does get hot to walk on because it’s nylon?
It didn’t occur to me that having your AC on the roof was unique until someone pointed it out in one of my IG photos.
What I’ve learned is that having a rooftop AC unit is common in areas that are hot.
It’s certainly a nice feature when you are looking at the curb appeal of your address in Sun City. However, the real reason is that it’s much more efficient to cool this way because you are pumping air downward. Using gravity when you can is a smart thing.
If this sounds like a commercial for Sun City, AZ, let me continue that theme by saying, “But wait there’s more…”
These aren’t the only quirks that we have discovered in our area. And maybe these details are found in many retirement communities too.
