Simplified European Summer Outfits With 1 Dress
Our Thrifty 6 group is styling European summer outfits. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to showcase an idea I was inspired to create after seeing this video on Instagram.
In fact, I created many of these looks using the navy dress as a base at a fashion show for Just Be Youtiful using the boutique’s clothing.
For this European summer outfits idea, I wanted to recreate it using items from my closet after I purchased the dress.
Quote of the day: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt.
If you are in my age group, then you might enjoy cruises as much as Rob and I do because you can go to many places without a lot of hassle.
I always think it’s beneficial to pack a dress for our trips and this navy one was ideal for the idea of European summer outfits.
Even though the dress itself isn’t thrifted, and this prompt came from my Thrifty 6 group, many of the items are preloved, which I will point out.
There are many articles on my site about packing for Travel if you need other inspiration.
The Dress Layer for my European Summer Outfits
I chose this dress for my European summer outfits base layer because it was a neutral color that would go with everything, and it could be layered both over and under very easily.
Sidenote: I did not layer under the dress in any of these European summer outfits but it would be easy to put a t-shirt under it as well as wear a slightly longer skirt under it.
The details that made this dress work for my European summer outfits were
- Elasticized waistband so I could wear it alone if needed.
- Just above the knee so I could layer over or under the skirt.
- Sleeveless in case the temperatures are warm.
- The material is cotton and very comfy.
For this challenge, I kept the footwear at a bare minimum to emulate a true vacation. I wore silver heels and gold flats.
This worked with my experience when cruising since cruising meant days full of walking and evenings dressed up for dinner.
Dinner In Italy
Italians are known as one of the best dressed, so I put together a glamorous look with this navy dress.
Since the dress has silver metal details on it, I copied that with my silver heels, long dangling earrings, and a sequin purse.
BTW, this purse was my grandmother’s and is so small that my phone doesn’t fit in it. However, for a cruise, it’s the perfect size for our room key. I figured Rob could carry my phone, right?
European Summer Outfit in Paris
Those Parisians love simplicity, so I just wore a neck scarf and beret for this outfit. While I’m showing the look with heels, it would be just as fabulous with the gold sandals.
Spanish European Summer Outfit
This look reminds me of a Spanish look. It’s a little boho and ready to trounce around.
As a casual European summer outfit, I wore my gold sandals made for loads of walking.
Insider tip: This brand of shoes, Ros, not only has options for narrow, wide, and wide wide sizes but it also is meant for comfort. There are tiny pillows in the insoles and created with moderate arch support.
I wore this same skirt over a yellow dress years ago.
Out In Belgium
Belgium is one of the big lace-making countries, so wearing this crochet overlay over my navy dress is a nod to Belgium.
I wore this overlay over a different blue dress on our recent cruise, and I’ve worn it over an all-white look in the past.
Wine Country Outfit
Having a shawl or poncho to throw over my navy dress fits the image of touring wine country, don’t you think?
I knit this poncho years ago and love how it’s a bit asymmetrical.
Switzerland Summer Look
I remember my father bringing home a red dress with a white apron from Switzerland when I was a kid. Of course, I didn’t like it and hardly wore it.
But that’s what this layering reminds me of. Don’t be fooled. This white “overskirt” could easily be worn as a strapless top too.
I also used a headband in my hair. While I don’t usually spend a lot on my hair accessories, I was told this brand is the most comfortable ever. I can wear it all day, but it’s a lot to spend on it.
Swedish European Summer Outfits
A sleeveless dress like this is easy to layer any kind of roomy top over it. I’ve shown it here with both a short-sleeved top and a strapless top.
Insider tip: Just because you are wearing a dress, doesn’t mean you have to show the top part of the dress. It can be covered up.
Thrifty 6
With the fashion and textile industry being a major contributor to landfills and other environmental pollution, we decided to make it the mission of this little group to focus on second-hand items.
Insider tip: If there aren’t many wonderful secondhand shops near you, then I included a list of online shops that I love at the end of this post.

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge
“I have never been to Europe in the summer but based on Nancy’s description of it, I dressed for fickle temperatures and a chance of rain with lightweight layers and useful accessories. I wore a thrifted slip dress and jacket both in cheerful pink prints because they coordinated with my very old pink and black rain galoshes. A cloche hat offers practical protection from the sun or the rain. Now I am ready for any European summer weather!”
Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style
“European summer might be a fashion style, I can tell you a real European summer is wet and grey! And cold! So what I wore this season is this jeans, and you know how I feel about jeans. But it was to cold and wet to wear something really nice. I layered it with my new shirtdress, so if it started to warm up I could take of the jeans, which is the only pre loved item. Luckily August is finally sunny and warm and I am embracing my dresses and skirts finally!”
Emma of Style Splash
“According to Refniery29 the “European Summer” or “Euro Girl Summer” aesthetic “puts an emphasis on “clean”, elevated outfits — this time taking elements from classic French and Italian style”. I’ve teamed a postcard print satin wrap blouse by Twisted Wunder that I bought on eBay years ago, with classic sailor style navy trousers from River Island and a basket bag from Zara. I added classic gold and pearl jewellery to finish the look.”

“This month’s T6 theme is ‘European Summer’ so I’m wearing red, white and blue to represent Great Britain…
…and also, a little nod to the Paris Olympics…
…but mainly because I want to show off my beautiful red, white and blue vintage maxi skirt.
This 1970’s original is an eclectic mix of patterns, colours and fabrics with the interesting addition of completely see-through crochet sections at each side.
The pretty perforated panels provide perfect ventilation on this, the hottest day of the year!
At 34˚C in the shade, this is a great European Summer day!”
Sally of Within a World of My Own
“I thought it would be fun to create an outfit from a mish-mash of various “European Summer” aesthetic trends I found online: denim, white T, wide leg pants, button-down shirt, loose-fitting silhouettes, leopard print, silk square scarf, pendant necklace, simple mix-and-match jewelry, neutral colors, and flashes of red. Anchoring my look with two thrifted pieces: my trusty button-up denim shirt and a vintage silk scarf in aqua and red by Italian brand Roberta di Camerino (the hand-rolled edges are amazing). I loved how this outfit turned out!”
