Monday Mimic Style: 3 Ways To Be Inspired

There’s no easier way to figure out what to wear for the day than to take someone else’s look and make it your own. Or as I’m calling it: Monday Mimic Style.
As my friend, Em, once said, you don’t have to copy it, but just be inspired by it.

Quote of the day: “When you start to love yourself for the first time when you start to truly embrace who you are-flaws and all your scars start to look a lot more like beauty marks.” Jacob Tobia

When Mireille was out visiting us, we thought we would have fun by each of us choosing an outfit that the other had worn a while back and then recreating it.
Make sure to click over to Mireille’s article to see which outfit of mine she wanted to mimic.

This idea of mimicry style is exactly why Pinterest is so popular to get ideas of outfits you want to wear. Make sure to follow me on Pinterest and pin the looks you like from my articles so others can be inspired too.

In fact, this isn’t the first time the crew has showcased ways to mimic style.

3 Easy Options for How to Mimic Style

We all get inspiration from what we see online or in real life.

Usually, when we like an outfit on someone else, it’s because it’s our same way of dressing, or maybe it’s because we realize we have those same clothing items.

Yet in all reality, there are 3 easy ways to mimic style.

1-Copy the outfit
2-Use the same types of clothing items
3-Recreate the color combination

Remember, just because you mimic someone else’s outfit does not mean it will look exactly the same. Hopefully, you add in your vibe and personality.

Insider tip: There are also other specifics when mimicking someone’s style that can make the outfit seem off. Remember that proportion, details, and color tones can make a difference.

I wanted to showcase all these options from Mireille’s outfit. You’ll see there are similarities but also differences that I’ll point out.

Mireille’s Yellow Dress for Monday Mimic Style

I remember seeing this outfit of Mireille’s months ago on her blog and falling in love with it. I’m sure part of the draw was the fact that I had the same items in my closet.

Yellow ruffle dress-check
Cropped denim jacket-check
Brown cowboy boots-check.

So with the idea of copying the look for Monday’s mimic style, I grabbed those items and put together my outfit.

Jean Jacket Outfit

Let me share just a couple of details about these items.

My dress is one that I bought for a wedding over 15 years ago. I’ve worn it dressed up in the past, but there’s no reason I couldn’t casualize it with denim and cowboy boots.

This denim jacket is a recent addition to my closet because having 4 denim jackets is not enough, haha. Right now the cropped versions work so much better with many of my outfits, and I liked the color of this one.
PLUS I found it for only $5 when Cathie and I took Mireille Thrifting.

These tan suede cowboy boots were also a secondhand find from over 6 years ago. If you think that cowboy boots are only for cowboys, then you’d be wrong.
The proof is in my article showing 8 outfits worn with cowboy boots.

What are the Differences?

Let’s talk about the differences between my look and Mireille’s. Neither is better than the other, but when you are copying a look that you like, your differences can make it more you, or it can make it seem off.

1-Dress-my ruffle dress is a different silhouette and color.
2-Denim jacket-my jacket is lighter in color, has a pointed collar, and I didn’t roll up the sleeves
3-Boots-my cowboy boots are a lighter color and suede material.

Because of the color differences, Mireille’s look has a more gold hue to it whereas my look is less saturated.

To make the outfit feel more ‘me”, I added extras.
1-Headband
2-Southwestern purse
3-Statement earrings

Same Items But an Entirely Different Look

It’s just as easy to recreate a look by using the same category of clothing items yet the the outfit will turn out incredibly unique. It’s the concept instead of the exact same clothing.

For example this pink outfit.

1-It’s still a dress (no ruffles, but about the same length)
2-Worn under a jacket (it’s cropped but a moto leather jacket)
3-With boots (taller and tighter than the cowboy boots)

The overall outfit is one that you might never first think of when you see Mireille’s yellow dress look. Yet it’s really the same concept.

This is why you can mimic style in your own closet. You don’t NEED to buy new things, but take the items and create your own fabulous ensemble.

Insider tip: COLOR. Color is a huge player when you see something you like. That’s one reason that this pink, print dress outfit looks so different than the “copy” look.

Recreate an Outfit with Color

Another easy option for this Monday’s mimic style is to take the color combination of an outfit that you admire and use the same colorway.

How I put together this one.

1-Yellow dress=Yellow top
2-Jean jacket=Jeans
3-Brown cowboy boots=Tan cardigan wrap

I wanted to add my own touch even with this color combination option so I wore green shoes. Green is not part of the original mimic style look of Mireille’s, but there is some subtle green in my t-shirt.

Plus, I love to add an unexpected color to my outfits.

Insider tip: If you struggle with adding a third (or fourth) color to a look, then repeat that color in your accessories or purse.
