Black and white pieces are one of those wardrobe staples that seem simple…until you start wondering how to make them feel fresh, personal, and not too predictable. That’s why we decided to think of new and interesting ways to style black and white skirts.
Quote of the day: “You cannot expect to live a positive life if you hang with negative people.” Joel Osteen
Recently, we shared ideas for styling black and white pants, and I thought we could explore the same concept with skirts, except with DIFFERENT ideas.
This means you can apply these concepts to anything you own that is black and white. It gives you loads of options and ways to stretch your closet.
A patterned skirt like this is such a fabulous neutral because it can go polished, edgy, playful, or sporty depending on what you pair with it.
If you know me, I think there are unlimited ways to wear a black and white skirt without defaulting to the same old black (or white) top.
Black and white is truly timeless, so feel free to check out other ways we’ve styled the color combination:
–Black and white summer outfits
–Polka dot fashion in black and white
–Black and white with fun items

A black and white skirt acts almost like a blank canvas. Even if the print is bold, the colors are neutral, which means you can style them in endless ways.
In my past, I would have only paired a print with the colors in the print itself. I am SO glad that I’ve evolved, and hopefully I can help you evolve.
I came up with a color recipe to help you combine colors, especially with print items. Here are a couple of examples (and there are many more in my library of posts under Colors: Color Recipe):
–Floral item
–Animal print item
–Silk pants
The trick is pushing you out of your “safe and usual” options.
Since my crew experimented with earthy colors, pastels, brights, and mixing prints with our black and white pants, I came up with more options, including denim, metallic, and sporty items.

Denim is an easy pairing with anything since it’s become quite ubiquitous in our society. So much so that I now consider it a neutral.
Instead of wearing a chambray denim shirt, I wore this denim tank top that I had DIYed from a pair of shorts.
As I discussed in this IG video, I don’t consider it a success. It’s still kind of wonky. So it may get a makeover in the future. But I still wanted to wear it since I spent a lot of time and energy on it last summer.
Why does denim work so well? I believe that it softens the boldness of black and white while making the look feel very modern.

Details:
-The denim top is a bit low, so I added a Halftee. Use my code Jtouch20 for a discount.
-Since the pockets on the skirt had bright pink in them, I accessorized with the same color.
-Did you notice my anklets?? All the young girls are wearing them.

Charlotte chose the metallic option, which pairs so well with your black and white skirts. She opted for silver metallics, but ANY of them would work marvelously.
What I Love about metallics is that they behave almost like neutrals. In fact, many times, silver will look white, so don’t overthink it.
Details:
-My mom wore this skirt with white and red accents in the past. It was created by cutting off the top of a dress.
-Her metallic tank top is not only reversible but also able to be worn backwards. Because there are 4 different colors on each quarter, it’s a 4-in-1.
-I’d like to point out that her belt buckle is gold, and it’s absolutely modern to mix your metals as she has.

Lesley chose the sporty option for how to wear a black and white skirt.
She made it “sporty” with:
Stylist tip: These are all details that you can use to casualize anything and everything. It’s very similar to what I showcased with a suit.
Adding sporty elements is a wonderful trick if you want skirts to feel less dressy and more retired Lifestyle-friendly.

Details:
-A backpack is a fabulous way to casualize a look, and Lesley’s even adds more colors to the mix.
-Athletic sneakers are worn with everything nowadays.

The beauty of how to wear black and white skirts is that you aren’t locked into one option.
We’ve shown how the same color skirt can be styled: (and of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg)
That’s why I love styling experiments like this. Fashion doesn’t need to be complicated, just try all the things and have an open mind.
