Dressed For Our Birth Year
The Magnificent 8 group of women are talking about how we would be dressed for our birth year.
You have to admit that this is a challenge because obviously, you aren’t wearing the styles of the time when you were born or even for many years after that.
Quote of the day: “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you odd.” Flannery O’Connor
Thus we depend on the internet as well as asking our older friends (as I described in my email.)
This idea of getting dressed for our birth year was a fun idea for our Magnificent 8 group (shared below) and really gets you thinking.
When we have these prompts for my groups, I always like to try to use the items we already have in our closets and not go buy something.
So while these are all modern clothing items, it’s the vibe and ways we combined them to work as the idea of dressing for our birth year.
There are many clothing items that can be thought of as old-fashioned, but it is all about how you style them. For instance:
- How to wear brooches in a non-frumpy way
- Wearing your scarf in modern ways
- Innovative strapless bra because those fun summer tops need a good strapless undergarment
Charlotte-Dressed for her Birth Year of 1938
This time period is the beginning of WWII and women during this time only wore dresses and skirts. One article that I read talked about silk slip dresses being fashionable.
With this idea, Charlotte grabbed a colorful silk shirtdress from her closet. She’s worn it 3 years ago showing how it could be styled from day to night.
Considering women had a much stricter clothing style at that time, she paired the dress with white pumps and a vintage purse.
Since the purse was very dark, she hung a small scarf from it to liven it up.
She accessorized with pearl earrings which were very iconic of the time.
Lesley-Dressed for her Birth Year of 1950
The 50’s were known for the nipped waist and skirted silhouette and Lesley delivered with a great option from her own closet.
These types of skirts may feel “dressy” if you’re always used to being in jeans, but they are incredibly cooler in the hot weather too.
Lesley wore classic ballet flats and a small scarf around her neck.
What isn’t obvious is the charm bracelet on her wrist that is very reminiscent of the era.
You can even see the scarf in her ponytail from the back photo.
Jodie-Dressed for her Birth Year of 1965
There were 2 significant types of clothing styles from 1965. One is mod fashion, and the other is hippie fashion.
Since I never got to enjoy the hippie fashion as a professional, I have come to love some of the elements now.
These recycled jeans were perfect for the prompt of dressed for our birth year.
After pulling the jeans on, I figured I would take one of the scarf hacks I’ve saved and use it for my top.
This trick uses a scarf and necklace to combine into a backless top.
We went shopping at a fabric superstore after these photos, and the clerk told me I looked “groovy.” Yep, that was the word of the hippies, right?
I made sure to wear my gold hoop earrings and carry my fringe purse as part of the look.

Magnificent 8 With Dressed as our Birth Year
Meet the women of our Magnificent 8 group. We are a collaboration among 8 stylish women, each in a different age bracket, ranging from their early 20s to their mid-80s. The mission of this collaboration is to show you just how ageless style is, and how we can each dress, however, we’d like, and in ways that make us feel fabulous. There are no age restrictions on style. So wear what you want, when you want, add a smile, and strut your style with confidence.
