Classic & Unusual- What Colors To Wear With Olive Green Pants

If you have a pair of olive green pants, I bet you already know how versatile they are. It doesn’t matter what silhouette they are, but the options of colors to wear with olive green are incredibly varied.
Not only am I showing you our favorites, but I also show you many outfits from over the years.

Quote of the day: “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin

The quote above reminds me of how important it is to go into your closet and play with multiple combinations. Especially when it comes to what colors to wear with olive green.

Insider tip: My way of thinking is that ANY two colors can pair together in an esthetic way. Sometimes it helps to add another color or try a different shade of the color. But remember, thinking about it in your head is much different than putting them on your body.

Olive green is often an unsung hero in our wardrobes. Its earthy richness makes it a great staple for all seasons, especially fall. But when you’re looking at that olive green jacket, pants, or top, you may wonder: “What colors should I pair with this to really make it pop?”

Today, I’ll show you 4 broad color categories that will complement olive green beautifully and add flair to any outfit. There’s something for everyone whether you want to keep things neutral, get playful with bold colors, or try something unexpected.

Insider tip: And as you can see, both men and women can benefit from this idea of what color to wear with olive green.

Signing up for the emails below is a dose of daily positivity. Besides the free eBook, my email family gets personal tidbits of what’s going on in my life along with other happenings, sales, information, giveaways, extra photos, and interesting articles.

1. The Basics for What to Wear with Olive Green

Neutrals are the perfect starting point for anyone who prefers a subtle aesthetic or is experimenting with olive green for the first time.
Olive green tends to be subdued and muted, so the basics work easily for beginners.

White & Cream

If you want a crisp, clean contrast, pair olive green with white, cream, or both. White adds brightness and a bit of sharpness to the olive’s muted tone.

Cream, on the other hand, adds warmth without the stark contrast that white brings, creating a more subdued, elegant look that feels perfect for fall and winter months.

Outfit details: This is one of my favorite looks for my mom even though she wasn’t a big fan of short pants at the time (2016). We added black, another neutral with her scarf and belt to give some contrast to the outfit.

Navy Blue

Green and blue are a combination that doesn’t get talked about much.
Yet navy’s deep, rich tone contrasts beautifully with olive, but in a way that feels refined rather than too bold. This is a great option for fall and winter, especially if you prefer a more subdued outfit.

I’d call this combo a wonderful option when you want to mix neutrals but still want to keep things interesting.

Outfit details: Both the navy blue t-shirt and the blue button shirt are muted like the olive green, but even Rob adds a contrasting color with his red Cariuma sneakers.

Animal Print And Olive Green

Animal Prints

Animal prints may not be your definition of basic, but since most animal prints are a combination of neutrals, I thought I’d include the option here.

I love how animal prints come back every fall and winter. Whether you prefer leopard, snakeskin, or the multitude of other animal prints, there is something for everyone.

Outfit details: Yes my animal print is pink, Nancy shows a black and white version and my mom included a brown and black leopard with her olive green.

2. Bold and Bright: Playful Pops of Color

If you’re ready to make a statement, olive green is a fantastic base to play with bold colors. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try one or all of these ideas.

Mustard Yellow

Olive green and mustard yellow make a stunning, autumn-inspired pairing. Mustard yellow brings out the warm, earthy tones in olive while adding a pop of brightness that feels cheerful without being overpowering. This combo is especially great when transitioning into fall.

Insider tip: If it feels like any two colors are a bit of a stretch to pair together, make sure to add a necklace or scarf that has the colors in it. It’s a great way to create an intentional look.

Outfit details: This mustard yellow blouse started as a dress. I bought it off of Poshmark and it hung wonky. So I had my mother cut it off and now it’s a top. I used loads of decorations to add sass to this outfit including a brooch at the waistband, an interchangeable strap on my purse as well as clip-on earrings on my shoelaces.

Bright Pink

Bright pink and olive green is an unexpected yet gorgeous combo that can take any outfit from “meh” to “wow!”
Olive green is subdued enough that it provides the perfect backdrop for such a lively hue. This contrast is particularly fun in spring and summer, but don’t limit yourself. Yes, you can wear bright pink in fall and winter also.

Outfit details: My mom made this bright pink top years ago. She couldn’t find a belt that she liked to go with the looks, so she grabbed an old scarf and used it as her belt.

Bright Colors To Wear With Olive Green

Red

If pink is a bit too girly for you, red is another beautiful choice. It’s a bold choice that stands out and shows that you’re serious about style.

You can see in these photos how the red really stands out against the olive green. It’s a great way to change the focal point of a look.

Outfit details: If you struggle with pairing red and green because it seems too “Christmassy”, then using olive green can be a perfect replacement for a bright green.

3. Pastels

Pastels aren’t always worn by older women, especially in the fall and winter, yet they can be such a wonderful suggestion for what to wear with olive green.

With our previous examples, neutrals kept the olive green muted, and bright colors gave the olive green a pop. So as our third category, pastels can blend nicely with our olive green pieces.

Outfit details above and below: There has been no shortage of examples on my site for what colors to wear with olive green that include pastels. Lilac, light pink, light yellow, and melon are just a few ideas that you can explore.

4. Unexpected Hues: Try Something New

If you’re ready to take your olive green outfits to the next level, try some colors that aren’t the usual suspects. These pairings add a bit of edge and creativity to your wardrobe, allowing you to stand out in a fun and stylish way.

Lime Green

Who would have thought that lime green and olive green would work so well together? Yet in all reality, they are just different shades and values of the same hue…green.

Olive green is green with more black and grey in it and is very muted. While lime green has more yellow and white in it making it brighter.

The combination is a match made in heaven.

Outfit details: The idea with the photo from this original post was about combining lilac and lime green, yet when I added the olive green jacket, it showed how those two shades play well together.

Turquoise

Turquoise is one of those colors that is considered universal because it truly goes with everything. It’s one of those that looks good with your complexion no matter what undertones you have.

Considering that turquoise is a shade of blue, then it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s one of the colors for what to wear with olive green. We saw how navy blue was a great example, thus turquoise looks just as nice.

Outfit details: Nancy’s jacket is not olive green per se, but in the photos, it comes across that way with a mix of colors in it.
It’s a good reminder that you should take a photo of your outfits and look at them that way. When we see our clothing up close and personal, they can look different.

Burgundy And Olive Green

Burgundy

Last but certainly not least, we have burgundy—a rich, deep shade of red that pairs so well with olive green, it’s like they were meant to be together. This combo is perfect for fall and winter when you want to lean into those warm, cozy vibes.

The balance between these two tones makes for a rich, dynamic look that’s sure to turn heads.

Outfit details: I hand-knit that burgundy sweater and do you know that I must have purged it when we moved to Arizona? I’m a little disappointed in myself. I can’t even remember why I gave it away, because now I look at it and see nothing but wonderfulness.
